Helping medical students become better doctors

Another student has a paper accepted in an indexed journal

It is not often that a medical student in the 2^nd year of MBBS publishes a paper. This morning Himanshu, a 2nd year MBBS student of the G.S.V.M. Medical College, Kanpur, India, wrote:

I feel immense pleasure to share that our case report titled "Systemic Lupus Erythematosus with Multi-Organ Involvement in a Young Female: Lymphadenopathy, Lupus Cerebritis, Lupus Nephritis, and Cardiac Manifestations" has been published in the Cureus Journal of Medical Science (Peer-reviewed+ PubMed Indexed).

This wouldn't have been possible without the support of my friends, my mentors, and especially my senior Dr. Aadil

I congratulated Himanshu who has also happens to have registered for our online courses.

I asked him, “Did our course help you for this paper?”

He replied, “Surely it did ma'am. The literature searching skills I have learnt from the first course at QMed has been of immense help so far. In fact, in all the papers that are about to come and in all the papers I am working on, the literature reviewing skills you have taught are of immense help!”

He then added – “I however learnt a lot of lessons while working on this paper. During the peer review, I got to know the blunders I had made. They were rectified as I accepted the faults and the paper was eventually published :)”

I replied: “That's the best learning spirit! Peer reviewers often give great free inputs! And learning from them is a great thing to do. Way to go!”

It is heartening to see medical students attempting research publications early in their student days. A trend that started only in the last few years. And if our courses help them, we feel happy about our contribution to their success and growth!

What is interesting is that Himanshu has so far completed only our introductory course and has expressed that this course itself has helped him so much. I am hoping that once he finishes the detailed courses, he will attempt larger studies and learn lots more! It would be interesting to see how much easier such students find their post graduate thesis projects. We sincerely hope that they will do a great job then!

Reaching out our courses. Successes. Challenges. New approaches

Hello!

We hope you are staying safe and taking all precautions in the challenging times. Just as we were hoping that we would steadilhy move towards a no-Covid state in the coming months, a fresh wave has struck. In our city of Mumbai we have had a big load. We hope that we move towards good days soon.

We have had success stories and challenges. Just recently a small institution - AO Health Care Services, which is part of the Apollo Hospitals - a well known chain in India, has taken access to our online ourses. And we await payment from another medical school and a dental school. We hope these two join us this month. When they do, we will have five educational institutions registered. Wtih three smaller institutions and a bunch of individuals, we have around 2600 people onboard. That is a good number in less than one year. And yet, we just cannot rest till we reach out to the hundreds of medical schools, dental schools and more in the country!

But with the surge in Covid cases, the educational institutions have not been able to prioritise going through our proposals and have to fight other battles - should they have online classes or real time classes; should they have students staying on campus or send them home - and more.

So while we continue to approach institutions, we are also working on spreading awareness of our courses via "Google Ads". As a registered and vetted not for profit, we have the privilege of having "Ad Grants" - by which Google allows us to advertise at no cost! We have worked on specific pages of our website, and will soon launch advertisements, by which we hope lots more individuals will view the ads and join us. We also have a couple of volunteers who have offered to help in this activity.

If you can think of how we could do a great job with Google Ads, do consider helping us out. You will need to

a) Tell us what keywords YOU would use to find QMed.

b) Go through the following pages in our website - the Home page, the About us page and the Donate page and let us know if we could make suitable changes in these. (We are also working on the Courses page and the Resources page - making some major changes)

And while we work towards self-sustenance via our courses, since there are "unavoidable Covid-based delays", do consider helping us in one or more ways

Give us a monthly recurring donation
Give us single donations at intervals that suit you. Better still give during the Bonus Days that GG holds
Spread the word about us - get some friends to give. Do consider creating a Fundraiser

Our total need is around $6500 every month. And we currently need at least half of that to be raised through donors. Till our courses sustain us better.

Our courses - moving towards a community participation!

In the midst of tough situations (the Covid effect still prevails!), many good things have also happened.

Two medical colleges have just joined us to do our courses. One is the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Guwahati, Assam. This is a very new medical college and right now just twenty faculty members are registered for the course. We held an orientation session for them and they were enthusiastic to get an idea of what all we offered in our learning platform. We discussed how they could go ahead with "learning in bytes" and have regular interactions with us. They then also discussed opening the courses to their medical students and we encouraged them all the way!

The other is AIIMS at Kalyani (West Bengal). This is also a relatively new medical college and they have just got the approval to go ahead - so the formatlies are in process.

We always love interacting with medical students and two of them in the recent past pointed out minor ambiguities in a couple of questions and then helped us reframe them for clarity. We really appreciate their efforts.

One Dr Roja - a homeopathy physician and research scholar - pointed out some changes that have happened in PubMed, since we did the recording for the course. We have made the said changes in our course site and thanked her for the same.

We do hope to see lots more community participation in keeping our courses upto date and error free. Still more - we hope that with time participants will give us great suggestions in making ithem better and better. This would be a great joint effort!

Two more medical colleges are evaluating the courses and we look forward to their joining us soon. We are also talking to groups of medical students to encourage them to do the courses.
