Update on literacy classes

By Elizabeth A Appleyard | Program Administrator

In January, there were 545 students taking literacy classes at learning centers. AIL’s online education program continues to expand. Meraj Academy is the educational program broadcast on TV Meraj. This program gives access to a comprehensive 7-12th grade education via TV programs and is aimed at all students, but especially girls who are unable to attend school. Teachers are trained specifically to provide lessons through this medium and are taught how to load content to Youtube and interact with students via social media.

TV Meraj:  two separate studio spaces were decorated for the culture and education programming. These two spaces are used to produce literacy education programming and to deliver university courses virtually, such as management and leadership, journalism, psychology and computing.  Education is one of the main objectives of Meraj TV and the station has produced hundreds of educational programs since its inception.

From Sakena Yaccobi: “At the same time as girls were banned from education, I decided to take a new approach to educating girls throughout Afghanistan. It is vital that the daughters of Afghanistan do not lag behind in their studies.  I founded Meraj International Academy to teach school lessons in a form that can be taught and distributed easily to girls in their homes by experienced teachers. Today, when I saw the pictures of a group of girls in Bamyan Province who gather together in their village and study their school lessons through this academy, I was very happy and my motivation doubled. These girls come to a neighbor's house and study their school curriculum through Meraj Academy on the TV.”

Thank you for your support for literacy education in Afghanistan.
