In 90% of cases, HIV transmission from mother to newborn occurs during childbirth. In the other 10% of cases, HIV is contracted when a newborn breastfeeds. However, with proper access to treatment and preventative care, HIV transmission from mother to child can be entirely avoided.
With proper access treatment and HIV care, all children of HIV infected mothers can begin their lives HIV free. This can occur once the treatment is introduced during pregnancy, and continues throughout breastfeeding.
Our Born Free of HIV program would not be possible without your help. With a donation of $25, you would be supporting HIV testing for 5 women in the clinic — we perform over 3,000 tests each year. With a donation of $50, you would be providing all the laboratory tests for one mother during her prenatal period, which includes an ultrasound.
Since 2005, GAIA Vaccine Foundation has seen over 26,000 women for prenatal care. Our outreach ability to provide treatment would not be possible without your generosity- we thank you for your continuous support as we enter the new year!
