A recent report by the Institute for Security Studies detailed how Mali is considered the 13th most dangerous country to give birth in the world. Mali's fetility rate of 6.3 children per woman is one of the highest in the world, yet it's maternal mortality rate is 2.6 times higher than the global average. A high maternal mortality rate is reflective of a failing healthcare system and one that is in much need of improvement to save the lives of Malian women and their babies.
While Mali has faced years of political instability and violent conflict in the north, childbirth has killed more Malian women than 6 years of the security crisis combined. This crisis has also forced many healthcare clinics to close, at least 116 since the violence began. Many remain under resourced and under staffed.
As Mali continues to confront politcal instability, violent conflict, and the COVID-19 pandemic, resources and programming to ensure the health and wellbeing of women and children in Mali is more important than ever. GAIA Vaccine Foundation continues to work in Sikoro and provide additional maternal health resources, including free HIV testing and the MTCTP program. Support GAIA VF today to support women and children in Mali.
Thank you for your support to GAIA Vaccine Foundation!
