Children with visual disabilities have very limited access to books. The best books for visually impaired children are of course print – Braille books or books with tactile representations of pictures. Braille is used by people who are blind or partially blind. This language requires the user to feel raised dots on a page with their fingers. A print-Braille book is one that provides both print and Braille on the same page, making it possible for a visually impaired and a normal sighted child to read from the same book. Thus, a sighted parent, sibling, friend, or teacher can read along with the child.
Indian Association for the Blind (lAB), based in South India is a well-known non-profit organization working to provide education, employment, training and rehabilitation for the visually challenged from rural areas. Late Mr S.M.A.Jinnah, the visually challenged activist and a group of like-minded visually challenged people founded IAB in 1985.
Since its inception, IAB has educated and rehabilitated more than 23700 visually challenged children and youths mainly from rural areas. In a country with the highest incidence of Blindness in the world, IAB has been working for about 33 years in empowering people with visual challenges through education. Your philanthropic interest in making them having their own braille books is deeply appreciable and this gives rise to $7,719 through your generous donations.
Still there is inadequate funds for production and distribution of Braille Text books to our visually Challenged School Students. Currently we are circulating only minimum number of copies of a text book in a class room. So, we look forward in raising more for this cause. As always, we, along with GlobalGiving, will do our best in reaching out to generous donors across the Globe and will strive to bring happiness on the face of each of our beneficiaries.
