Strengthening Safeguarding Systems for All

Effective child protection starts with strong systems. In Makurdi, the absence of formal safeguarding protocols leaves students vulnerable to bullying and abuse. The World Health Organization emphasizes that “strengthening school policies is critical to preventing violence and promoting mental health.”
This project establishes clear safeguarding guidelines, trains 100 teachers and counselors, and builds peer-support networks in 20 schools. By involving all stakeholders—students, staff, parents, and local authorities—we ensure that protection is everyone’s responsibility.

No More Silent Suffering: Improving Reporting

One of the gravest issues facing Makurdi students is the culture of silence around bullying and abuse. Most incidents go unreported due to fear of retaliation or disbelief. Nigerian government data confirms that stigma and weak support systems keep students from seeking help.
Our project will change this by building robust reporting mechanisms and training teachers to respond swiftly and sensitively. We’ll promote peer-led initiatives so students are empowered to speak up for themselves and their friends, creating an environment where silence is replaced by solidarity.
We will also work to reduce stigma by holding community forums and awareness campaigns, ensuring that every child and adult understands that violence and bullying are never acceptable—and that help is available.

Building Resilience: Equipping the Next Generation

The trauma of bullying and gender-based violence doesn’t end at the school gate. Studies show that children exposed to violence are at higher risk of depression, anxiety, and even suicide (UNICEF, 2022). In Makurdi, where 80% of students report such experiences, the need for intervention is urgent.
Our project’s threefold approach—teacher training, student life skills, and peer-led clubs—addresses the roots of the problem. By teaching conflict resolution and emotional regulation, we empower students to defuse tensions before they escalate. Teachers are equipped to spot early warning signs and respond supportively, while peer-support clubs become safe spaces for sharing and healing.
Donor support funds workshops, counseling, and awareness campaigns that challenge stigma and normalize help-seeking. With your help, we will not only reduce incidents of bullying and GBV but also build a generation of emotionally resilient, socially responsible youth.
