A Home of Hope: One Family's Miracle

By Katherine Batzin Mendez | Volunteer & ServiceTeams Coordinator

The first two months of the year have been filled with transformation, emotions, and new beginnings. Thanks to the dedication of our ServiceTeams, we have built 24 homes, bringing safety and stability to families across Alotenango, Parramos, El Hato, and San Lorenzo el Cubo. Each home represents more than just walls and a roof - it is a dream fulfilled, a prayer answered, and a future secured.

One of these homes now belongs to the Azurdia Juárez family. For months, Genaro Azurdia and his wife, Hilda Juárez, had prayed for a miracle - a way to provide their children with a safer future. Their home, pieced together with rusted metal sheets, barely kept out the rain. Genaro worked tirelessly in the fields while Hilda cared for their children and crocheted accessories to sell in the community, doing all they could to provide for their family.

Then, one day, hope arrived.

During a field visit, the Nuestros Ahijados team met Genaro and shared the news about our home-building program. His heart filled with hope. But when he learned that his family had been selected for a new home, he could hardly believe it. He asked us to repeat the news, again and again, until it truly felt real.

As the foundation was laid and the first walls went up, Genaro and Hilda worked alongside our volunteers, building their own future with their own hands. Their children, eyes filled with excitement, kept asking, "When will we see our new home?" The answer came sooner than they could have imagined.

On dedication day, their new home stood before them, painted in a bright, hopeful blue. Overcome with emotion, Genaro and Hilda wept tears of joy. But the surprises didn’t stop there. The ServiceTeam, deeply moved by their story, filled the home with a bunk bed, a stove, a water filter, and a pantry stocked with food.

The family’s gratitude was immeasurable. As a heartfelt thank-you, they handed each volunteer a letter that read:  "To the best team, friends, and angels sent by God."

In it, they shared their journey, their prayers, and the overwhelming joy of receiving a home they once only dreamed of. The volunteers left with more than just memories - they left with the profound certainty that love, faith, and hard work can truly change lives.

Today, the Azurdia Juárez family not only has a safe home, but a renewed sense of hope. In their new space, they will watch their children grow, dream bigger dreams, and continue to believe that miracles do exist.
