Our organisation ended the year 2018 with a December school holiday program. We started the holiday club on the 13th December and ended on the 20th December 2018.
The holiday club was hosted at four of our high risk violent and gang infested areas in the Western Cape.
Each of the holiday clubs had between 50-80 scholars aging from 6 years old to 16 years old. This was an appropriate opportunity for Fikelela to introduce all our programs of which Jerry Giraffe is one for children age 5 years to 10 yeards old.
We focused on introducing lessons around rules why and why must we have rules, consequenses of not obeying the rules, on the first day the children were asked to implement rules for the holiday club. On agreement of the rules made working with the participants more successful and pleasant.
It was recommended that the Jerry Giraffe program be used more often when dealing with young children as it together with hard work and commitment of all role players, made the holiday club experience very successful and memorable.

The Jerry Giraffe Sunday School program was taught to seven of the little ones at the parish of St Mark's District 6. They started the program at the end of July and finished at the end of September. Teacher Jo Anne Van Niekerk faced some challenges as some of the children were not there every Sunday but she managed to get all the lessons over to them.
They completed the ten sessions under the guidance of teacher Jo Anne Van Niekerk. The children had great fun whilst being taught very important life skills lessons that will help protect them from the dangers of child abuse. Teaching the children about the importance of their bodies and body pride, how they should treat each other with kindness and how to care and protect their bodies. The ten week program successfully ended with a certificate celebration. Teacher Jo Anne treated the little ones to delicious cup cakes and party packs, the children enjoyed the celebrationas much as they enjoyed the lessons taught over the past few weeks.
We look forward to receive more updates from other parishes in 2019.
The 5 institutes that attended our Jerry Giraffe training last year October 2017 are facing a few major challenges such as:
- New placements takes place often in the child and youth care facilities and teachers are working on finding a solutionn around this so that they can continue with the program without any interference.
- Fikelela will visit these institutes in 2019 again, and see how they are coping and if more support from our side is needed.
- Offer training to new teachers and at the same time open the training as a refresher course to those teachers who's not confident enough to faciliate the program on their own.

During the month of June & July most of the institutes that attended the Jerry Giraffe training in October 2017 were visited.
The care givers and teachers were very pleased with the ongoing assistance Fikelela has offered them. Some of them needed hands on training which we willing assisted them with. We assisted with the first two lessons whereby they gained confidence.
Seeing the excitement and eagerness coming from the children is so overwhelming. They enjoyed the sessions and especially look forward to hugging Jerry and getting the opportunity to be in control of the talking flower, this really helps the children to be more outspoken in a controlled manner. The Jerry songs is another favourite they look forward too.
What we observed from our visits to the Institutes are that the biggest challenges that teachers face is they have new children joining the institute all the time and not having sufficient teachers to separate the class. However they are grateful when they have extra support from the overseas volunteers. We use this opportunity to train the overseas volunteers as well so that they can assist and introduce the Jerry program to the new kids. Jerry Giraffe is definately making a difference in the lives of the children! Thank you, the donor for your ongoing support so that we can role out these programs to our children.
