6000 Street Children in Nepal: Give Them a Home

More children living and working on the streets

Recently, we have been overwhelmed by the amount of children needing assistance in Birgunj, Janakpur and beyond. We are now expanding our Outreach Programme and hoping to locate most of the children that have nowhere to turn to for help in Province 2 in southern Nepal.

The elections are coming up in Nepal and many political candidates are preoccupied with trying to win the votes but the actual issues facing local communities are being totally neglected - nobody wants to make any decisions now as everything might change again in the next month or so. It took us a very long time and a lot of effort to locate a brother of the boy that had been abused in the most horrendous ways and forced to work at the abuser's hotel. We had suspicions that the brother might also be forced to work and we were right - we are now trying to move him to our centre and work out the ways we can help him and prosecute the abusers.

On the 12th April we celebrated the International Day for Street Children - the children from our and other centres took part in an arts workshop and had many games organised. We also invited around 20 children that we are trying to help on the streets and within the community. They all had such fun and were very happy with the food and care provided. We are in touch with them on a daily basis and hope that most will join us at least during the day when they can receive education, extra curricular activities, food and can socialise with our other children. Sadly, most of them are being forced to beg or work on the streets by their parents so we are liaising with the families on the best future plans for the children.

In the next 2 weeks we are launching a new project so we will keep you updated with these developments as well!

Amazing achievement

There has been a lot going on at our children's centres in Birgunj recently!

First, the most exciting news - our Subash has just passed his college exams and will be getting ready for his university next year! He was one of the first boys that joined our Children's Home in 2013 and is now working as a Project Assistant part time and continuing his studies. We just couldn't be prouder.

We have been very busy trying to help a number of children through our Child Helpline. We are now working with a fantastic organisation, the Starlight Foundation Nepal funded by Justice Ventures International, who are helping us file the case against a senior army officer who, together with his wife, was responsible for abuse, torture and forcing a child to work. Many politicians from the ruling party in Nepal and other influential organisations are still trying to put pressure on us not to do anything. The little boy had horrendous burns on his legs and bruises all over his body. We have done a number of psychological assessments with the boy and after spending two weeks at the hospital, he is with us now. Luckily, he seems to be a very happy boy now. At the moment the case has been filed and police are supportive so hopefully the man will be prosecuted. If not, our amazing lawyers will ensure that we can bring a private prosecution.

We are now starting a new part of the project focusing on the child labour cases in Birgunj. We have done initial surveys and investigation and 4 new boys joined us in the past week. We need to do more investigation on other cases and we will accept new children and work out best plans for their future when appropriate.

The winter is starting now in Nepal so we are focusing even more on ensuring there are no children on the streets.

Some new touching stories and how we're helping

The past few months have been a real roller coaster for our staff with so many sad stories of children to deal with. At the same time, we are very happy that we are there to help them as there is no other organisation to assist them in any way.

Recently, we were contacted by the police and asked to help an 8 year old boy who saw his mum being killed by his aunt and uncle. His dad is in prison for a different crime so he was under the care of his grandmother who decided to send him to a hotel to work. He was physically abused there by the hotel workers, had to work very long hours and didn't get paid for the work. When the police found him, he was wearing plastic bags instead of clothes. Now he is safe with us and is getting all the necessary counselling and care. He has other 4 siblings under the care of the grandmother - all are very scared and not safe, with one 6 years old girl also working in a different hotel. We are now working on bringing all the children to our shelters and then we will plan for their future.

We have also finally managed to get birth certificates for the two girls that have been staying with us for just over a year and we are now able to move them to our new Janakpur safe house for girls. This was a huge achievement for the staff as getting birth certificates and citizenship is a very long process - especially when the children have no parents. Without these documents the children are not even able to attend school. So the girls will embark on their journey to Janakpur this week where our social worker and the counsellor will be planning their future to ensure they receive good education and best possible start in their lives.

Another big achievement has been a series of meetings that have led to an MOU to be signed in the next few weeks between us and the Chamber of Commerce in Birgunj. As part of the MOU, the Chamber of Commerce have committed to assisting us with finding jobs for the parents/guardians/families of the children that we help. This will make a huge difference to the lives of so many children over there.
