Today, the whole world is facing the consequences of a waste management crisis. About 72% of the nearly 9,000 tonnes of daily waste isn't dealt with properly which results waste polluting our rivers, lakes, and streets, which is hazardous to health and the environment. Seva Mandir is tackling this issue by educating people, working closely with local communities, and improving waste management facilities. So far, this project has helped 5,400 families and 1,800 shops in Southern Rajasthan.
The tribal communities, often located in rural or semi-rural areas, are the most affected by the problems caused by not handling waste properly. The government's waste management programs don't always reach these areas and there's a strong social stigma about working with waste with limited resources or knowledge on safe disposal of waste. As a result, these communities are facing the crisis of growing amount of waste they produce, leading to critical environment and health hazards.
Since 2004, Seva Mandir has been helping different communities in Rajasthan to set up and run good waste management systems. The No Open Waste Initiative is now active in 5 areas in Southern Rajasthan. It provides services like collecting and sorting waste, and safe disposal to more than 5,400 homes and 1,800 shops. The initiative will also focus on educating people through campaigns, meetings, and workshops to teach the importance of handling waste responsibly.
Seva Mandir has always focused on helping communities become self-sufficient and sustainable since its founding in 1968. The No Open Waste project is a perfect example of Seva Mandir's values. It uses the organization's many years of experience and strong community ties to create waste management systems that communities can run on their own and can be expanded to more areas. When you donate, to the Clean India Initiative in its current locations and helping it grow to reach more communities.
