Addressing Global Warming through Waste Management

We would like to share an encouraging update from the field.

Our team observed that in some village markets and public places, people were still mixing waste and disposing it in open areas. In some cases, plastic waste was also being burned due to limited awareness about proper waste disposal practices.

With your support, Seva Mandir is helping communities adopt better waste management practices and encouraging people to keep villages and public spaces clean. To spread awareness, 10 street shows (nukkad nataks) were organized in market areas, bus stands, schools, dharamshalas, and village chowks.

Children, youth, shopkeepers, and local community members actively participated in these activities. Through songs, discussions, and community interactions, people learned the importance of separating wet and dry waste, avoiding littering, and stopping the burning of plastic waste.

The awareness drives also encouraged families and shopkeepers to bring only segregated waste, helping improve cleanliness and protect the environment.

While we understand that changing habits takes time, it was encouraging to see community members actively participating and showing interest in creating cleaner surroundings for everyone.

We are happy to share that, with your support, our team recently organized an exposure visit to the Dungarpur municipal waste facility as part of our efforts to build safer and more sanitary waste management systems.

During the visit, the team saw how regular door-to-door waste collection keeps city roads clean and how waste can be transformed into something useful, such as compost and biogas. Last year, compost produced at the facility was sold to local farmers, turning waste into a resource that supports livelihoods and the environment.

The visit also helped us reflect on what truly matters - careful monitoring, cleaner waste handling, and dignity and basic facilities for sanitation workers. Seeing both strengths and challenges gave us clear direction on how to build systems that are not only efficient but also humane.

These learnings will directly shape our work ahead, especially around household waste segregation, timely collection, recycling, and respect for sanitation workers.
