OVERVIEW
This report provides an update to the GlobalGiving Platform on the completion of the Achiaman community water project, undertaken as part of the broader "Clean Water for 100 Communities in Ghana" initiative. Spearheaded by Young Visionary Leaders Ghana (YVLG), this initiative aims to provide clean drinking water to underserved and marginalized communities across Ghana through the construction and donation of mechanized boreholes.
The project focuses on addressing the pressing water needs of communities in the Northern, Eastern, and Western regions, with a target of supplying clean water to 900,000 individuals, including vulnerable groups such as children, women, and people with disabilities. These communities often struggle with limited healthcare, economic challenges, and inadequate infrastructure, with access to clean and affordable water being the most urgent need.
By addressing the water crisis in Achiaman and other communities, this initiative tackles the root causes of critical social challenges, such as poverty, gender inequality, and poor health and education outcomes. The completion of the Achiaman water project marks a significant step forward in improving the overall living conditions of community members and driving sustainable development in Ghana.
This report outlines the activities carried out, milestones achieved, and the transformative impact the project has had on the Achiaman community, while also highlighting lessons learned and opportunities for scaling up the initiative to reach additional communities.
INTERVENTION
As part of efforts to address the challenges faced by the Achiaman community, Young Visionary Leaders Ghana (YVLG), with the support of its individual donors and partners, successfully renovated the Sonitra-Achiaman water project. This mechanized borehole now serves as a reliable source of clean drinking water for over 2,734 beneficiaries, including women, children, and people with disabilities in the community. This intervention marks a significant step in improving access to safe water and enhancing the quality of life for residents.
BENEFICIARY
About three thousand (3000) beneficiaries, including children, young people, women, the elderly, and people with disabilities, will benefit from this project once it is completed in July.
CAMPAIGN ACTIVITIES
As part of our commitment to ensuring that 900,000 target beneficiaries gain long-term access to clean water, we are actively driving the "Clean Water for 100 Communities in Ghana" initiative through ongoing fundraising efforts on our social media platforms. Recently, we participated in the GlobalGiving Little By Little donation matching campaign, leveraging this opportunity to amplify support for the project. Additionally, we are utilizing Giving Tuesdays to raise awareness and increase engagement for this vital cause.
While our fundraising continues, we are also identifying schools and communities in urgent need of clean water, prioritizing those with the most critical challenges. Our goal is to provide clean drinking water to these areas as soon as we secure the required funding, staying aligned with our mission to deliver clean water access to 100 communities across Ghana.
IMPACT STORIES
The Water Management Project has made a significant contribution to the sustainable development of these communities, transforming the lives of beneficiaries, particularly children and women. Previously, children had limited knowledge about clean water access and its management. Today, over 100 children have gained valuable insights into water management practices at home and in school.
Sophia Akoto, one of the schoolchildren, shared that the project has been incredibly helpful in enhancing her understanding of clean drinking water and its proper use. Abigail Owusu, the women’s leader in the community, remarked that access to clean water will greatly benefit the community’s socioeconomic activities, providing a foundation for improved livelihoods.
Ama Danso, a young girl from the community, highlighted how the water project has transformed her daily life. She explained that she previously spent hours fetching water before and after school, often arriving late and exhausted. Now, with access to clean water close to home, she can get to school on time and feels more energetic during lessons, which she believes will boost her academic performance in the future.
CHALLENGES
The Clean Water for 100 Communities in Ghana initiative seeks to raise approximately $28,000 to provide access to clean drinking water for underserved communities and schools. To date, we have garnered a total of $728 from six generous one-time individual donors. Despite our participation in the recent Little by Little Matching Campaign, we have yet to secure sufficient funding to fully support our mission.
ACTIONABLE MEASURES
The Young Visionary Leaders Ghana team is actively implementing strategies to enhance the success of the Clean Water for 100 Communities in Ghana fundraising campaign. Our social media team champions this initiative weekly, focusing on expanding our donor base and increasing contributions. By leveraging platforms such as the GlobalGiving Little by Little campaign and Giving Tuesday to raise awareness, we are optimistic about achieving meaningful progress and impactful results in the near future.
CONCLUSION
We acknowledge the tremendous support of our corporate and individual donors throughout this journey. This achievement would not have been possible without your generosity, and we deeply appreciate your kind gestures.
