While many members of the Splash team are busy focusing on the installation of filtration systems and maintaining existing infrastructure, Splash understands that supplying clean water for kids can only keep them healthy as long as they pair it with safe hygiene habits. This year Splash celebrated World Water Day and Menstrual Hygiene Day with events at primary schools across Addis Ababa. Schools in Addis tend to be enormous in size, some having more than 4,000 primary age students at one campus alone! Through 32 different events, we reached 48,543 attendees with the message that every child should practice good hygiene.

Over the years, Splash has introduced hygiene education and sanitation interventions to many of our programs. These behavior change programs include a combination of “hardware” – child friendly WASH infrastructure – and “software” – programs that target children and adults, like hygiene clubs and parent associations.

Since 2016, behavior change programs have been a major focus for Splash in Ethiopia. Using Splash supported curriculum, many schools formed student hygiene clubs that promote health and hygiene in school among peers. They also organized massive soap drives where schools in Addis have so far collected 13,710 bars of soap!

By the end of 2017, we aim to lock in our implementation model through clear global standards and guidelines for urban WASH-in-School projects. These standards and guidelines are critical to enable our next stage of growth as we look to scale our impact.

Splash has big goals for Ethiopia – 100% coverage for every government school across Addis Ababa. Success will bring over 400,000 kids clean, safe water for years to come. The first half of 2017 has continued to pave the way for scale, replication, and completion in Addis Ababa and (eventually) across Ethiopia. Since our last update, we have completed one major WASH in Schools project, bringing clean water to 1,510 new kids!

Today Splash served 57,194 children at 35 schools, 10 orphanages, 5 shelters, and 3 hospitals in Addis Ababa.

Splash Partnership in Ethiopia Delivers Impact

Splash’s goal in Ethiopia is to reach 100% of government schools in the capital, Addis Ababa – that’s over 450 schools serving more than 400,000 kids!

In the fall of 2016, the Addis Ababa Education Bureau (AAEB) invited Splash to lead them in conducting a city-wide water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) survey of all the private and government schools in Addis to better understand the conditions in the schools. Splash, having conducted the first-ever city-wide WASH survey of all public schools in Addis in 2015, became known by the government as a valued leader in urban WASH.

In partnership with AAEB, Splash developed and co-managed a huge survey of all government and private schools in Addis Ababa – 465 government and 1,674 private schools – in 2016. Splash was responsible for providing the mobile data technology to collect the survey data (Formyoula), co-designing the survey questions with AAEB, and training AAEB to conduct the survey and manage over 100 survey collectors.

We are very excited to report that this work is now complete and that preliminary results will be released in the next month! The partnership has greatly increased Splash’s capacity to design and manage surveys using mobile data collection technology. It also built the capacity of the government to better serve its schools and ensure that all children have access to safe water and clean toilets.

Most importantly, this work will inform our ongoing work in Addis and future interventions.

By the end of 2016, Splash had served 51,280 children at 54 schools, 10 orphanages, 5 shelters and 2 hospitals in Addis Ababa.

New Year New Goal!

2016 was a critical year for Splash Ethiopia. This year, our Ethiopia team grew into a robust and diverse team of a dozen skilled engineers, managers, and health professionals. Our team introduced WASH programs to 12 new sites, benefitting over 7,200 kids, teachers, and staff, while continuing to strength our ties with the Ethiopian Government. The Addis Ababa Education Bureau (AAEB) demonstrated their growing commitment to and support of our work by funding a Splash-led WASH survey of all private schools in the city, and inviting Splash to join the city’s WASH Steering Committee.

Today Splash served 51,280 children at 36 schools, 10 orphanages, 5 shelters and 2 hospitals in Addis Ababa.

Splash has defined a 5-year implementation plan for Addis Ababa. Aim for 45 schools to receive WASH programs, bringing us to 20% coverage in Addis. WASH experts (Nick) to lead team to create citywide map of engineering specs, and get them approved by government Edu, Finance, Construction bureaus. Private sector collaborations (concrete companies, sanitation hardware, and sanitation behavior change. Integrate Splash work into AAEB work, so when they present standards our standard are shaping what Addis will look like in the future. As a foundational year, 2017 will pave the way for scale, replication, and completion. Will need to pilot several new supply chains (materials sourcing) and sanitation solutions in 2017 in order to standardize a final WASH model Addis that can be replicated in other cities across Ethiopia and eventually, Africa. On this trajectory, we plan to achieve 100% coverage in Addis in 2021 with a WASH model that’s been government-backed and readily adoptable by other regional municipalities.

Goal: 44 more schools, total 100,162 kids, cost per kid: $1.63.
