The coastal areas of Bangladesh are different from the rest of the country because of their unique geo-physical characteristics and different socio-political consequences that often limit people’s access to endowed resources and perpetuate risk and vulnerabilities. Bangladesh’s coast is the biggest victim to natural disasters and highly affected by climate change with problems including salinity and water logging, soil erosion, flooding and cyclones.
The hazards of natural disasters cannot completely be prevented, but the risks and vulnerability can be reduced through increasing capacity. In that regard, BEDS is training theVillage Disaster Management Committee (VDMC) members to improve their capacity on pre, during and post disaster roles and responsibilities. VDMC members are the key persons in the coastal areas who aware people and work to reduce the damage due to the natural devastation. In Bangladesh natural devastation associated with tidal surge and cyclones particularly happen in the pre-monsoon months of April-May and post-monsoon months of October November. That is why BEDS is focusing on the capacity improvement of the VDMC members.
BEDS is trying heart and soul to mitigate the disaster risks of coastal vulnerable people. Recently BEDS is trying to raise funds through the GlobalGiving platform for the project entitled “Reducing Disaster Risks of the Sundarbans Coastal People”.
