Summary

The United Student Achievers Program (USAP) assists highly-talented, economically-disadvantaged students with leadership potential and an ethos of giving to negotiate the admissions and scholarship process to attend top universities in the United States and around the world. This project will allow USAP friends and alum to expand the Zimbabwean model to cohorts of students in Malawi, Uganda and Zambia by covering program and application costs.

Challenge

There is no shortage of talented, dedicated and bright young people across the continent of Africa who yearn for quality higher education. Often what stands between talent and opportunity is the ability to negotiate, navigate and finance international university admission processes. Students in the Malawi, Uganda and Zambia face challenges at every stage of applying, enrolling and transitioning to university.

Solution

USAP has proven to be a very successful college access program that empowers high-achieving, low-income high school students to gain admission and scholarships to study at universities in the United States, and around the world. For 17 years, the USAP model has successfully assisted Zimbabwean students in large numbers as well as smaller programs in countries in Africa, Asia and South America to access quality college education. This project aims to expand USAP to Malawi, Uganda and Zambia.

Long-Term Impact

When a student who has leadership potential, academic talent, and a strong ethos of giving from a low-income community is education, s/he will impact not only their family, but their entire community and even nation. USAP builds a cohort of future ethical, open minded leaders in all fields who will return to Africa to build their countries.
