Our New Plan for 2023

Our goal is to provide an enriching and memorable experience for all participants while promoting outdoor education, skill-building, and team-building. To achieve our goals, we are in the process of planning a wide range of activities and workshops that cater to the interests and preferences of our campers. These include outdoor sports such as hiking, fishing, biking and other traditional Afican activities. We will also offer workshops on outdoor cooking, survival skills, plant identification, and first aid. Evening activities such as campfire stories, stargazing, and talent shows will also be included to foster a sense of community and camaraderie among campers.

We are currently scouting for a suitable location that is conducive to our program's goals and objectives. The location should have access to natural resources such as rivers, forests, and wildlife to facilitate the activities we have planned. We are also considering various accommodation options such as tents, cabins, and yurts, depending on the location and the needs of our participants. Also to ensure the success of the program, we will be recruiting volunteers who are passionate about outdoor education and have the necessary skills to facilitate the activities we have planned. We will also prioritize safety by providing adequate safety and adhering to safety protocols and guidelines.

We are committed to providing an enriching and memorable experience for all participants in our summer camping program. We believe that the planned activities and workshops will help our campers develop new skills, foster teamwork and leadership, and appreciate the importance of nature and conservation. We look forward to providing updates on the progress of our planning and the program's eventual success.

We are making impact!

Success Story:

Norwai, a 39-year-old single mother of two children, dropped out of school due to a lack of support and found it challenging to find a job that could sustain her family. However, after joining Camp for Peace Liberia's vocational training program, she learned valuable agricultural skills that will help her improve her living standards. Through the program, Norwai learned to be resilient and develop her self-esteem to make the impossible possible. Her story is a testament to the impact of Camp for Peace Liberia's vocational training program on the lives of those who participate in it.

During the period under review Camp for Peace Liberia enrolled 27 participants in its agriculture vocational program in 2022, with 13 males and 10 females completing the training. The program focused on improving participants' skills and knowledge in agriculture, including rice and vegetable production, animal husbandry, crop rotation and management, pest control, and site selection. The training also provided skills in leadership development, cooperation, communal living, self-initiative, resilience, and communication. Participants came from diverse backgrounds, including those directly affected by the 14-year crisis between 1989-2003 and the Ebola crisis of 2014, those neglected by their communities, those with no support to continue their education, and those interested in learning skills to contribute to nation-building.

The training has had a significant impact on the participants, resulting in a paradigm shift in their behavior, as demonstrated by their regular attendance throughout the program. They have shown their peers and community that life is possible once the opportunity is presented, expressed hope through their testimonies, and presented plans for post-training engagement. Even those with drug addiction have refrained from drug and abnormal alcohol consumption, with their violent behavior gradually turning into gentleness, which is manifested through their attitude.

My Camp Experience

"My three weeks' experience at camp can be equated to my academic year at school. Little did I know that many things can be learned at camp that I cannot quickly learn at school. Usually, at school, we are most focused on academic work without time to invent and explore other tools that build us physically, mentally, and emotionally. Camp has helped me fill that gaps" (Moses).

What is considered a one-time event that brings experience, expertise, and emotion is all gearing up. Due to the experiences of others who attended our Christmas camp last year, we have the highest application of young people who expressed to participate in our camp this year. During the period under review, we have received more than 750 applications from people who expressed interest in attending this year's camp. We conducted a survey capturing the experiences and success stories of 250 campers and parents regarding how camp has positively affected their lives. Below are a few excerpts from the surveys.

My son was a very troublesome child at some point. He started following bad boys, taking in drugs and alcohol, staying out late and at some point not coming home, abandoning schools many days, performing poorly in his lesson, and disrespecting everyone, including us as parents. But since we went camping, his life has shifted more positively, and he is no longer doing those things he did the previous years. He has taken the mantle of leadership and maturity that we are proud of as a parent. Thank God to Camp for Peace Liberia for their timely intervention (Martha).

I usually ask my friends what so much at camp that you people always want to go to. Their responses were insufficient until one summer; I decided to try the camping environment. I later disputed my belief that camp was a waste of time. Fortunately for me, when I visited a camp for the first day, I saw life's flip side. I saw the activities as exciting and connected to my concern. For the first time, I experience real love and care that can not easily erase from my memory. Thank God to Camp for Peace Liberia and the partners for their support.

These are excerpts we collected from our survey during the period under review. There are many more testimonies and stories that we will be bringing in our subsequent report.
