Camp Continues to Remain a Vital Part of Our Everyday Life

By B. Abel Learwellie | Executive Director

Story telling moments at camp
Story telling moments at camp

Camp continues to remain a vital part of our everyday life and programming at Camp for Peace Liberia. During the period under review, we successfully hosted several day camps, meetings, and youth engagement activities, while also advancing plans to expand our camping site to reach more children.

In Salayea, we have enrolled 67 children in our camping school, where we are intentionally contextualizing traditional camping approaches to reflect the realities and needs of Liberia. Rather than focusing solely on recreation, we are using camping philosophy as a powerful educational tool—supporting children’s learning, personal development, and social growth.

Our program integrates values such as love, compassion, leadership, innovation, and play into daily activities. Through storytelling, team-building, creative learning, and practical engagement, children are developing confidence, communication skills, and a renewed interest in education. The camp environment provides a safe and nurturing space where children can learn beyond the classroom and build essential life skills.

A parent shared the following reflection after their child participated in the camp:

“Before attending the camp, my son was very quiet and struggled to express himself. He had little interest in school and often kept to himself. After attending the camp, I saw a great change. He became more confident, started sharing his ideas, and now even helps his younger siblings with their schoolwork. This camp has truly changed him—not just academically, but in his character and behavior.”

This testimony reflects the broader impact of our work. The camp is not just a place for activities—it is a space of transformation where children gain confidence, discover their potential, and develop a stronger sense of purpose.

As we continue to expand and strengthen our programs, we remain committed to providing innovative, contextually relevant education that responds to the challenges children face in rural Liberia.
