At the Sam Onyemaechi Humanitarian Foundation (SOHF), we believe that sustainable development begins with empowering young people to become responsible stewards of the environment and innovators for the future. The GreenPack: Empowering Nigeria’s Next Generation initiative was created to address two pressing challenges in Nigeria: environmental pollution and youth unemployment.
Across many Nigerian communities, plastic waste and poor waste management practices continue to threaten public health, ecosystems, and livelihoods. At the same time, millions of young people are searching for opportunities to learn practical skills, become self-reliant, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
GreenPack is designed to turn this challenge into an opportunity. Through environmental education, sustainable packaging awareness, recycling innovation, and youth empowerment programs, the project seeks to nurture a generation that values environmental responsibility, innovation, and community transformation.
By empowering young people with green skills and entrepreneurial opportunities, we aim to contribute to a cleaner environment and a more sustainable future for Nigeria.
Project Activities During This Period
During this reporting period, the project team focused on strategic preparation and community engagement in anticipation of the full launch of the initiative.
Although direct implementation has not yet begun, we have used this time to strengthen the project's foundation through the following activities:
• Engaging with community stakeholders and youth leaders interested in environmental sustainability
• Conducting preliminary research on waste management challenges and sustainable packaging opportunities
• Developing training concepts for youth empowerment in recycling and eco-friendly packaging
• Raising awareness about environmental responsibility and the importance of reducing plastic waste
• Preparing operational plans and strategies for future implementation once funding becomes available
These early activities are essential to ensure that when the project begins fully, it will deliver sustainable and measurable impact.
Challenges
While our commitment to the project remains strong, we would like to transparently share that no funding has yet been received for this project during this reporting period.
This has delayed the implementation of planned activities such as youth training programs, recycling demonstrations, and community environmental awareness workshops.
Additionally, the environmental challenges facing many Nigerian communities continue to grow. Rising levels of plastic waste, limited recycling infrastructure, and economic hardship place increasing pressure on both the environment and young people seeking opportunities for a better future.
Despite these challenges, we remain hopeful and determined to move forward with the support of our global community.
Looking Ahead: The Little by Little Campaign
We are excited about the upcoming Little by Little Campaign taking place from March 17 – March 20. This special fundraising opportunity allows supporters around the world to make an even greater impact.
During this campaign, donations made through the platform may receive additional matching funds, while matching funds remain, meaning that every contribution can help us move closer to launching this important initiative.

Once funding becomes available, the next phase of the project will focus on:

• Promoting eco-friendly alternatives to plastic packaging
• Supporting young people to develop green entrepreneurship initiatives
• Building partnerships with local stakeholders to expand environmental impact
These activities will help create sustainable livelihoods while promoting environmental responsibility.
