Our project in Margaritas, Chiapas, has come to a close. We have achieved great success, and surpassed our original goals. We provided training to 48 teachers and education authorities. We gave “I want to, I can... learn to be a parent” workshops to over 200 mothers and fathers. Finally, we reached 942 schoolchildren with our “I want to, I can... have success in school” program in three participating schools. The project was funded by MetLife, but without the additional support of our GlobalGiving donors, we wouldn’t have been able to reach as many children. For that, we offer you our deepest thanks!

Teachers involved in this program had a very positive experience that has changed how they do their jobs. Here is the testimonial of one participant teacher: “Before, I didn’t give my students the freedom to express their ideas, and sometimes I would be teaching, talking the entire time, like a traditional teacher, and during the course I learned that even the simplest thing that a boy or girl says should be taken seriously.”

Students’ behavior also changed. Here is an example, a testimonial from a teacher, of how more gender equity can be observed in the classroom: “Before we took this course, the girls didn’t participate…. before, the boys would just play football with other boys but not anymore, now the girls play too and the boys are realizing that girls can play football…they are learning about how not just men can play football, and those beliefs are going away.”

Finally, participating parents also reported changes in the way they interact with their children: “I tell my son that it’s good that he has better grades, and to continue to work hard and enjoy what he is doing, so that next term he will want to work even harder."

This project has been a success, and has especially helped teachers to better develop their communication skills, strategies for group management, and general life skills (which they then passed on to their students). Mothers and fathers that participated have better developed a sense of their roles as parents, and are more dedicated to helping their children to succeed in school. In the children that participated, school performance has improved, study habits have improved, and the daily practice of life skills has improved (especially empathy, expression and control of emotions, and assertive communication).

Our profound thanks, again, to all that donated to this project. Without your help we could not have reached as many children, parents, and teachers in Margaritas as we did.
