Dear Friend

Our renewed thanks to you and all GlobalGiving donors who have supported Oxfam’s response to the complex and challenging hunger crisis that is impacting people across multiple countries in East Africa. In our last update, we shared the project scope and reach that your support is helping make possible.

While the situation remains critical, we are pleased to share stories of resilience and aspiration from three people participating in these projects.

Abdilahi’s is building resilience to future droughts

Abdilahi, a farmer in Somaliland, participated in an Oxfam-supported project on drought-resistant farming practices. A collaboration between Oxfam, Candlelight for Environment, Education and Health in Somaliland, and Kaalo in Puntland, the project has built greenhouses for 4 communities and run sustainable agriculture activities across 15 villages.

"During the drought, most of our herds survived because they ate animal feed from our farm. They became healthy and provided milk. Even the camels started consuming the animal feed.

Moreover, my family didn't have to migrate, and my children were able to attend school because we had a farm that provided food for both us and our animals. We experienced rain in two different seasons, and since the seed distribution, I have harvested five bags of grain.

Now, if another drought were to occur, it wouldn't impact me or my family, as we have stored food and acquired the knowledge to survive in harsh times. Thanks to Oxfam."

Etsay is rebuilding her farm business

Etsay, a farmer from Tigray in Ethiopia, was part of a two year project run by Oxfam with Mums for Mums that aims to empower women in the area, while providing 37,985 people with cash and agricultural inputs to boost their livelihoods.

"In our community, the drought was catastrophic. Initially, we were seriously affected by the desert locust; now, we are affected by the recent floods. From the cash we received, I could buy five chickens. It wasn’t that much, but it’s a start.”

Halima is supporting her children and community

Halima and her family live in one of the areas worst hit by drought in Kenya. She participated in a cash, water, and food support project for affected families run by Oxfam and Strategies for Northern Development (SND). Besides feeding the family, she uses part of her drought cash assistance to settle school fees for her children and to run a mini-shop where she sells basic items to community members.

“We have seen drought situations come and go; we have even been in situations where we only moved to the next village or town because it wasn’t that bad. This last drought literally knocked us out, we were desperate and if SND had not come through for us we would have been telling a very different story.”

Situation update

As of June 2024, the humanitarian situation in East & Horn of Africa continues to be highly complex, impacted by years of below average rainfall followed by erratic rainfall and flooding, conflict, climate change, and soaring global food prices.

Over 39.2 million people in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and South Sudan are in need of humanitarian assistance.

More than 27.5 million people continue to experience ‘Crisis (IPC3+)’ levels of Hunger. This means that some households do not have enough food and are experiencing high levels of malnutrition, while others are taking irreversible actions such as selling off assets that are essential for their livelihoods, just to sustain a limited diet.
