Literacy Matters-Loretta & Blessing Read "Brown"

September 8th is International Literacy Day and it serves as a reminder of the work that remains to be done to ensure that every individual, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to become literate.

In 2020, 65.9 percent of people aged 15 years and above in Sub-Saharan Africa were able to read and write a simple statement. The adult literacy rate varied, however, according to gender. While 72.5 percent of males were literate, the share among females was measured at 59.4 percent.-https://www.statista.com/statistics/1233102/adult-literacy-rate-in-sub-saharan-africa

As we celebrate International Literacy Day, let us renew our commitment to fostering a world where everyone can read and get an education.

The FAWE school is committed to ensuring that girls are literate and educated. The FAWE girls recently read different African storybooks on their computers in the FAWE Computer Lab.

This video shows the teacher having his students, Lorreta & Blessing, read several pages of the African storybook "Brown" from the computer the girls share.

Drug Abuse Skit at Girls' Mentoring Session

Girls' mentoring sessions are held throughout the year covering a multitude of topics. One topic was drug abuse and its effects, and to make it more interactive the girls were split into groups and were told to write their own play and then act out the skit on why youngsters resorted to taking drugs and how they could seek help if they were struggling with drugs.

One group of girls created a skit based on how children, when not appreciated by parents for their educational efforts or when chided by somebody for their bad performance, were more easily influenced by bad company and may start taking drugs.

This video shows their skit:

I and my team members will display a skit on how children who are mistreated in their homes for one thing or another can lead to drug abuse. Sit tight as we present our skit. Thank you.

In the first scene, the Kids show their school report cards to the mom, and how mom is happy with the grades of one child but upset about the poor performance of the other. Mom scolds her, throws the report card at her, and compares her to the other child. The child feels insulted and hurt.

In the second scene, influenced by some bad elements at school, the girl, feeling insulted and hurt, acts out behaving badly, disrespecting teachers, and indulging in smoking and taking drugs.

In the final scene, after persistent attempts from the elder woman, the girl finally listens to her and understands the danger of drug use. The girl then stops doing drugs.

These are some ways a child might become a drug addict. They can only stop when they have someone who will start mentoring them in the right way. Thank you!

The skits helped the girls think about the causes and effects of drugs and the need for prevention. It also got them thinking about solutions, and how and where they could seek help if they needed help or knew someone who needed help to stop using drugs.
