Recently featured in an interview on 94.0 FM Radio, Mariama shared how she has received educational support from Develop Africa for the past five years. That support—school supplies, encouragement, and mentorship—has helped her move from a place of struggle to one of strength and confidence.

“To further my education,” Mariama said with determination when asked about her future.

Her story is one of resilience and potential, and she’s not alone. Girls across Kamawornie, where Mariama lives, are dreaming bigger because donors like you chose to invest in their futures.

Abu, Program Manager at Develop Africa Sierra Leone, also joined the radio conversation. As a native of Kamawornie, Abu has seen firsthand how a lack of educational opportunity has held communities back for generations.

“If more people here are educated, this community will move forward,” he shared.

Thirty girls from our Develop Africa Sierra Leone program took part in a mentoring session focused on sexual reproductive health and relationships. These girls walked away with more than just knowledge—they gained confidence, clarity, and the courage to shape their futures.

Led by three dynamic speakers—Ms. Isha D. (SRN Nurse), Dr. Philip A. (Medical Doctor), and Mrs. Mimi N.—the girls were educated on topics that are often overlooked yet deeply impactful: puberty, consent, menstrual hygiene, healthy relationships, and personal empowerment.

Ms. Isha opened the session by breaking down puberty changes and the importance of setting boundaries. Her empowering words encouraged them to dream beyond limitations.

Dr. Phillip emphasized bodily autonomy and the risks of early sexual activity, encouraging the girls to prioritize self-respect, personal growth, and long-term goals. He reminded them that their dreams are valid and achievable with the right knowledge and choices.

Mrs. Mimi provided a practical demonstration on menstrual hygiene, introducing the girls to menstrual cups as a sustainable option. For many, this was their first exposure to such information, and they asked thoughtful, curious questions throughout.

Beyond the classroom-style learning, the girls received personalized hygiene kits—including pads, perfume, shampoo, and more—that reinforced the lessons taught and provided practical support for their daily lives.

Girls who are informed and supported are more likely to stay in school, avoid early pregnancies, and become empowered leaders in their communities. This session helped demystify critical health topics and gave our girls tools to thrive both physically and mentally.
