Behind the Scenes with Hannah & Finda: Preparing for the Year of the Pencil

As we prepare for the much-anticipated “Year of the Pencil” event on November 20th, Develop Africa Sierra Leone (DASL) has been hard at work — counting, sorting, and packaging pencils that will soon reach thousands of eager students across the country.

Over the past several weeks, this effort has brought together DASL staff, girls from our sponsorship program, and Computer Studies students, all working side by side to prepare for this milestone in education. Their teamwork and dedication reflect not just preparation, but purpose — a shared belief that education is the key to empowerment and lasting change.

Among the young women leading the effort this week were Finda and Hannah, both shining examples of commitment and leadership within the Develop Africa family.

Finda shared,

“It’s encouraging to see how much effort goes into preparing something that seems so simple but means so much for learning.”

Hannah added,

“Through this process, I’ve learned about teamwork, planning, and attention to detail.”

For Finda, Hannah, and the other participants, this activity represents more than just organizing school supplies — it’s a hands-on lesson in leadership, community, and service. By taking part, these girls are not only contributing but also discovering their own power to make a difference.

The ongoing preparation for the Year of the Pencil symbolizes hope, empowerment, and unity. Every pencil packaged is a promise — a tool that can help a child learn, dream, and thrive.

Together, we are building a movement where every girl has the opportunity to learn, lead, and lift others along the way.

With heartfelt thanks,
Amy & the Develop Africa Team
