Thanda's Baby Programme!

By Candice McGregor | Member of the Marketing and Communications Team

Thanda has always favoured a holistic approach. Our aim is to offer educational and developmental assistance to children at every step on their learning journey. This is why we have introduced a completely new programme to our Early Learning Initiative in 2021.

Our Baby Programme!

This programme is designed for the benefit of children during the first 1000 days of their lives. Our Early Learning Home Visitors head into the community and into the homes of guardians to provide guidance on the importance of early learning and early interventions. Their aim is to equip guardians with the tools they need to stimulate their babies through activities and play. Toys, books and equipment (some of them made by our very own Home Visitors from arts and crafts supplies and found materials like empty yoghurt tubs) are also distributed to guardians, providing tactile objects to aid the learning experience.

Although this programme is less than a year old, we are excited to report that, in chatting to facilitators and guardians alike, we have already started seeing the positive impact the programme is having.

Zandile, one of the facilitators shared her experience with us: “When we first approached the parents, they had the view that raising a child is something they already knew, so us coming to them was like telling them something they already know.” But the team found, during their visits, there were some things that were new to the guardians. Zandile says: “They didn't know the importance of reading books to the baby, because they thought it was only for older children who understand. But as time went on, after leaving them with books and letting them read for the child, the child started wanting them to read or grabbing the book themselves, and liking certain pages, pointing at the colours and pictures. So, now we see the parents changing because they see the baby likes it. It's not us telling them what to do."

One of the guardian participants in the programme, Nelisiwe, shares her feelings on the programme thus far and how it has influenced how she interacts with her baby, Fezeka:

"I’m very happy about the programme, also because you visit our homes and help us develop our children to grow with healthy learning mind.

I’m very happy and it encourages me when I see a change in them that happens because I’m there as their mother. It motivates me to always be with them, so I can see them change and grow. Fezeka, I didn’t know that she can see what’s happening by the pictures in a book. On the first visit when the facilitator came, she read them a book, now when she sees a book, she asks to read it, then she points at pictures and says what she says.

I can see that through this programme, my child may have a brighter future, since they are learning so much from so young."

The first years of a child’s life are critical in their development and there exists a potential for strong foundations that will stand the child in good stead throughout their life-long learning journey. We are delighted to see guardians and their babies embracing the learning experience in this way and we look forward to seeing the tangible impact this programme has on childhood development as these bouncing babies grow into lively toddlers and we welcome them into our ECD.

Thank you for your support.

It is because of YOU that Thanda is able to create new programmes of this nature.

It is because of YOU that these and future infants have learning and developmental opportunities that those before them did not have.
