Dear Donors,
we are writing to you with heavy hearts, compelled to share direct updates from our local partner in Bethlehem at the Effetà Institute, where we support the education of children who are deaf or have hearing impairments. Describing the current situation in the Middle East is extremely difficult: after years of instability, the recent escalation of conflict has further worsened living conditions, disrupting every aspect of daily life.
Just a few months ago, there was a small sense of hope. Then, almost suddenly, the situation deteriorated dramatically. After the Christmas holidays, schools had resumed their activities with enthusiasm. However, the outbreak of hostilities forced the Ministry of Education to impose remote learning. For children – especially the most vulnerable, including those with hearing disabilities – this shift has been particularly challenging, as physical interaction and lip-reading are essential to their learning process. Despite the constant sound of sirens and the threat of rockets overhead, our local partners continue to closely monitor the well-being of families, hoping that children will soon be able to return safely to in-person classes.
The reality our partners witness every day is extremely harsh. Many students coming from Gaza carry deep emotional wounds. The healing process is slow, as the trauma they have experienced is still very real. In Bethlehem and across the West Bank, stress has become a constant condition. Many families have lost their source of income, as they are no longer able to travel to Jerusalem for work. With explosions in the distance, civilians often find shelter in basements, as there are no adequate protection systems covering the Palestinian territories.
Despite this darkness, the Effetà Institute remains a vital source of hope. Thanks to your support, we are able to ensure continuity in education and provide children with a sense of stability and care during an incredibly difficult time.
We stand strong alongside them. Thank you for being by our side during this tragic moment in history.
