Two years of support after COVID devastation

By Rosario Hernandez | Donor Relations Manager

Dear supporters, As this project begins to come to a close, we are extremely proud to share with you the accomplishments of this campaign: 286 people (145 women; 15 men; 116 youths; 10 children) participated in the awareness talks on COVID 19 prevention, Family Planning, Financial Management, Gender Roles, and Leadership. 480 people received emergency food packages, such as rice, groceries, meats, eggs, and vegetables. 50 families received chicks, frogs, nets, fertilizer, and crops for their family Home Garden Project. Likewise, 169 people (mostly women) received counseling and referrals in 2021, which were mostly concerned with the rise of domestic violence during lockdowns, loss of jobs, and mental health concerns due to isolation. 73 women and girls received bycicles during this year as well. In 2021, 193 families benefited from COVID-19 Assistance through emergency packages and financial support, whilst we provided 182 counseling and referrals in the same year. 433 Bikes, emergency food packages and school materials distributed in 2022. The impact of the strict measures we had to take as a nation during Covid outlasted the pandemic itself, but we are proud to say that together, we have been able to respond in a heroic manner and continue to support those who are still affected, as Siem Reap's economy is only just starting to take off again.

Testimonial:

Sreynich (Used another name for confidential purposes):

Before joining WRC's program, Sreynich, mother to a 4 year old girl, was living with her abusive, alcoholic husband. With the pandemic, she was exposed to him even for longer periods of time, and due to the isolation he became even more abusive. "I was so scared, I could not sleep at night".

She could not leave him as, because of Covid, she was not earning any income from her handcrafted items she used to sell to tourists.

When a WRC's social worker reached out, she was able to get support and information on women's rights, as well as accessibility to the help of the local community council, reporting her case for legal support. She now lives with her daughter, as her partner was removed from the household and her community expanded, thus being able to get by financially as a single mother.
