Start construction of a general welfare center!

Elderly who lives alone - smiled during our visit

Thanks to your generous support, we are continuing our relief efforts in Ukraine and Hungary. Today, I would like to announce the start of a new project.

Challenges of welfare environment in Zakarpattia

Since April of this year, we have been implementing the "Project for Construction of a General Welfare Center for the Purpose of Reconstructing Livelihoods and Improving Welfare for Victims of the Ukrainian War". This is supported by Official Development Assistance (ODA) funds from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as "Grant Aid for Japanese NGO Projects".

This is a project to build a general welfare center in Berehove city in Zakarpattia Oblast, western Ukraine, which we have been supporting since the beginning of our Ukraine project. As we have introduced in our activity reports so far, there are many people in Zakarpattia who are forced to live harder lives from before the war. Life has become even more difficult due to the impact of this war, and many people are unable to live even the bare minimum.

In particular, as women, children, and the elderly are affected, issues related to the welfare environment are becoming apparent. Since the lack of young men, the elderly are left alone, and women, even those who want to work, are forced to live in an inconvenient environment because they have to take care of children and elderly people who need nursing care alone.

We will build a general welfare center!

Against this background, we planned to construct a general welfare center equipped with nursing care facilities, daycare centers, kitchens, multi-purpose rooms, etc. We will renovate and use an abandoned hospital.

The aim is to rebuild the lives of war victims, including internally displaced persons and host communities, and to improve the welfare of the local community in Berehove and its suburbs. In addition, since there are no similar facilities in the area, it is expected that the very existence of the general welfare center, which is an important regional infrastructure, will lead to a sense of security and an improvement in the lives of residents.

After the facility is completed, we plan to hand over the facility to our local partner and continue to support the following six types of support.

(1) [Welfare improvement support] Take care of the elderly and children at daycare centers and nursing homes so that families who are able to work can concentrate on their work.
(2) [Welfare improvement support] Taking care of elderly people who have no relatives and have difficulty living.
(3) [Welfare improvement support] Regularly provide meals made in the kitchen of the facility to people living in the neighborhood who have difficulty living.
(4) [Learning support] Develop an environment for child education at daycare centers, lifelong learning for the elderly, and self-study for nearby students. In addition, if the number of internally displaced persons increases again due to the deterioration of the war situation, we will provide the multipurpose room of this facility for children as a place for studying.
(5) [Livelihood improvement support] Employ war victims as much as possible as staff of the general welfare center and pay their salaries.
(6) [Rehabilitation support] Develop an environment in which mental care and physical rehabilitation can be provided for soldiers who have returned from the battlefield and their families.

With no end in sight to the war, we turned our attention to the chronic long-term needs of the region and embarked on this project. We will continue to support the lives of the people of Ukraine, so please keep an eye on our future developments.
