Aid to Ukraine facing cold weather

By Sakura Ogawa | Project Coordinator of Ukraine Project

Aid for refugee accommodation in Hungary
Aid for refugee accommodation in Hungary

Dear Friend,

Thanks to your generous support, we are continuing our relief efforts in Ukraine and Hungary. We are preparing for winter in Ukraine and Hungary.

Winter in Ukraine is very cold, but some refugees and displaced persons do not have enough winter clothes and are staying in empty houses without heating equipment. Therefore, we have started to support them first with firewood and winter clothes. In the future, we plan to continue providing those supports, as well as installing stoves in empty houses.

Food and winter clothing assistance in Hungary and Ukraine.

Food was provided to refugee accommodation in the Mariapocs village, Hungary, and to local people in Zakarpattia, near the border with Hungary. We procure and provide a good balance of vegetables, fruit, dairy products, seasonings and oil. Talking to them, it is quite difficult to prepare food for all the people staying in the accommodation with foodstuffs that are hard to obtain, and they are still short of food.

We also supported winter clothing. The winter clothes were donated by friends in Hungary. There is a diverse range of people in the accommodation in Hungary, from babies to elderly people, and everyone gathered one after another and tried on the clothes on the spot, to their great delight. In addition, the owner of the accommodation gave us clothes that he had collected himself and that did not fit the refugees. Together with this, winter clothes will be delivered to the displaced people and host communities in Ukraine in turn.

Firewood assistance in Ukraine

In Zakarpattia Oblast, we are providing firewood assistance to displaced people and the host communities that are accepting them. This is because wood stoves are widespread in Ukraine. We also take into account the high price of gas and the fact that power outages are likely to occur.

When providing firewood assistance, we go from door to door to each of the target population's homes. We load the firewood into the vehicles in bucket relays, move them around, drop the firewood off and place it in each house... and repeat the process. This kind of pin-point support can indeed be said to be steady, but we believe that this is a point where we should not spare any time and effort, as there are people who cannot be reached with 'broad support'.

For example, there are many people that we support who find it difficult to go and receive support themselves, such as those who are blind or have a limp. And this is why they are having difficulties in their daily lives . For this reason, we visit them to ask about their needs, procure supplies and deliver them to their homes, all in one go.

By visiting homes, we are also able to hear directly about the recent situation and see the living conditions with our own eyes. In particular, they are now facing war, as well as drought and inflation, and the prices of utilities and daily commodities have risen even higher. It can be seen that the Ukrainian people are being squeezed into living from many different directions.

We will continue to provide food, winter clothing and firewood, as well as support for firewood making and stoves, which are currently underway, with the aim of introducing them in earnest. We will bring you more details in our next report!
