Step from the Shadow of War to a Bright Future

Valeriya, whose education was interrupted due to the war, continues her education journey in Türkiye.

Valeriya, entering Türkiye from Ukraine, escaped from the effects of the war and stepped into a new life. Valeria is 17 years old. She came to Türkiye with his grandmother and brother two years ago. Her mother and father still live in Ukraine. Valeriya stated that they stayed in a shelter with her family after the war and then decided to come to Türkiye to continue her education.

Valeriya, reaching Türkiye with a 21-hour bus ride after setting off from Ukraine, said that she had difficulty in the adaptation process at first due to language and cultural differences. However, she told that she started to get used to her new life by continuing Turkish course.

Continuing her online education in Ukraine, Valeriya is also studying Turkish and learning Turkish at the Public Education Center of the province where she lives. Valeriya, who plans to complete her university education in Türkiye, has a great interest in painting and dreams of becoming a painter in the future.

Despite cultural and language barriers, Valeriya emphasized that people in Türkiye support them and she is happy about this situation. In addition to the legal and social support provided to the family through the Association for Social Development and Aid Mobilization (ASAM) and Ukrainian Associations, contributions were also made to support Valeriya's school.

Valeriya said that despite the difficulties she experienced, she was grateful for the events and support in Türkiye. She also added that the most important thing for her is healthy communication between family, friends and society, and emphasized that people should love and respect each other and value freedom.

Valeriya stated that she had the opportunity to communicate with Turkish youth by attending youth camps during her life in Türkiye and that these experiences gave her strength. Her grandmother, Yevgeniye, emphasized that children should grow up in a safe and happy environment and said, "Children should meet in parks, not in shelters."

Valeriya inspired children and adults from her own experiences, showing that people should approach each other with love and respect.

Ukrainian Maria's Migration Experience to Turkiye

Born and raised in the Donetsk region, Maria lived in a small city in Ukraine. Having been a teacher, Maria had to stop working to take care of her daughter. Her daughter's autism disability required her to be supported by a special education process. Due to the effects of the war, their houses were badly damaged and they had to migrate to Türkiye.

Maria entered Türkiye in 2022. She provided her transportation by traveling by train through Hungary.

Having an only child, Maria shared her hopes for her daughter's future. She wishes her daughter, who was diagnosed with autism, could have a job where she could live independently and use her painting talent. Maria wanted to direct her daughter to art before the war, however as the war began, she had to come to Türkiye before realizing her plans.

Benefiting from social assistance in Ukraine, Maria also makes a living with similar assistance in Türkiye. She stated that these aids are important for their families due to their inability to work. Maria worked as a teacher before coming to Türkiye but could not work to take care of her daughter. She added that she had difficulty in finding a job in Ukraine.

Talking about the difficulties she experienced in Ukraine, Maria stated that she faced various obstacles in her business and social life as a woman. She stated that she encountered a language barrier when she came to Türkiye, but was generally satisfied with the social life in there.

Maria, who experienced advantages and disadvantages after migrating to Türkiye, emphasized that not speaking the language is a major disadvantage, but that the health services in Türkiye are more developed. She added that the vegetables and fruits are fresh and varied in Türkiye.

Maria stated that she devoted herself to the adaptation process after coming to Türkiye and that they can now socialize in Türkiye. She also thanked Association for Solidarity with Asylum Seekers and Migrants (ASAM) by stating that she received consultancy service from ASAM and that this process continues.
