20 Young Journalists Against Fake News

By AGIZO | Coordinator

In Goma, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, access to reliable information has become more important than ever. Years of conflict, displacement, uncertainty, and the rapid spread of information through social media have created an environment where rumors and fake news can spread quickly and cause fear, confusion, and tension. Young people are particularly affected, yet many young aspiring journalists lack the training, equipment, and professional spaces they need to verify information and report responsibly.

Our project, “Empower 20 Young Journalists to Fight Fake News,” aims to train and equip 20 young journalists in Goma with practical journalism and fact-checking skills, reporting tools, and access to a web radio/TV production studio. At this stage, we are in the preparation phase, including the identification and selection of qualified trainers and young learners. Our fundraising goal is $10,000, and we have already raised $156 thanks to the first supporters of the project and our collaboration with GlobalGiving. Every contribution is an important step toward creating a generation of young journalists who can provide their communities with timely, accurate, and responsible information.

The journey is only beginning, but the need is urgent. With the continued support of our donors and the opportunities provided through GlobalGiving, we believe we can mobilize the resources needed to reach our fundraising goal and move into the training and equipment phase. The project will ultimately help young journalists become trusted sources of information for their communities and contribute to greater transparency, social cohesion, and peace in eastern DRC.

To every donor who has already supported this vision: thank you. Your contribution is helping turn an idea into an opportunity for young people in Goma. We warmly invite individuals, foundations, organizations, and friends of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to join us. A donation of any size can help equip a young journalist with the skills and tools needed to challenge misinformation and bring verified information closer to the community.

Thank you to GlobalGiving for creating a bridge between local initiatives and donors around the world. With your partnership and the continued generosity of our supporters, we are working toward a future where truth is stronger than rumors and where young journalists have the tools to make a difference.
