The Bahamas is home to a rich diversity of whale species including threatened and endangered populations of sperm whales and humpback whales. Populations are declining due to human activities including increasing noise from ships, navy operations, habitat degradation, climate change, and entanglement in fishing gear. However, the majority of Bahamians are not aware that whales reside in our waters and the threats they are facing, hindering their conservation.
Whale Camp cultivates a passion in young Bahamians for whales and the vital role they play in ocean ecosystems, critical to an island nation culturally and economically tied to the sea. Increased awareness will empower Bahamian youth to advocate for conservation of marine mammals and their habitats in The Bahamas and the wider Caribbean region. A new generation of ocean stewards will ensure Bahamian whales are safe from harm now and in the future.
Two weeks of successful camp were held this summer and the pictures tell it all!
