Summary

Since 2011, Action10, with the help of Human Rights & Science (HR&S), has been engaging and empowering marginalized people in Kenya's remote villages through the table banking model, which improves access to investment capital. This ensures that people, especially the poor, participate in economic activities that benefit both the person and society. As a result, these individuals are better equipped to combat poverty, maintain financial stability, and run profitable businesses.

Challenge

Kenya's poverty rates are among the highest in the developing world and is estimated at 36%. A recent report indicated that nearly 80% of Kenyans are either poor or near the poverty line. Kenya's poorest people live in rural areas, where poverty rates are higher (40% vs. 28-29%) and per capita expenses are lower. Low-income households in such areas find it highly difficult to receive financial services which results in reduced business ownership, malnutrition and high school dropout.

Solution

Action10, supported by HR&S, will bring financial services closer to the disadvantaged individuals in remote villages. Villagers would be able to gain financial stability by making more lending resources available to them. Villagers can develop capacities such as entrepreneurship, financial management, and marketing skills through daily training provided by us. Villagers will be able to start businesses, invest in agriculture, provide for their families and pay for children's tuition.

Long-Term Impact

The empowerment and advancement of traditionally marginalized people would ensure the community's overall social and economic growth. Individuals would have greater economic independence, resulting in higher living standards in diverse societies where financial access is difficult. Entrepreneurship adoption will also play a significant role in improving sustainable livelihoods and lifestyles in Kenya's remote villages.
