Sex Trafficking is Still an Atrocity

By Alexa Telano | Development Associate

3 Generations has been documenting sex trafficking for 13 years. We have, and will continue to demand that sex trafficking be recognized as human rights abuse. It remains one of the world's fastest-growing crimes as well as a multi-billion dollar industry.

Our film Tricked, 2013, offers the definitive portrait of sex trafficking in America at that time. Tricked sought to bring light to a human rights emergency for the culmination of three years of filming in cities across the country. Today, it is estimated that between 15,000 to 50,000 women and children are forced into sexual slavery in the United States every year. In New York state alone, over two thousand young people in New York City are believed to have been sexually exploited or at risk for sexual exploitation in 2019.

Despite the atrocities they face, survivors of sex trafficking have found empowerment, courage and a voice. Even beyond our documentation of them, our subjects continue to share their experience and advocate. One such subject, Danielle, continues to advocate for sex working legislation and knowledge. We at 3G stand by Danielle, all of our subjects, and all survivors of sex crimes.

Although these human rights abuses remain in the shadows, at 3 Generations we will continue to advocate for sex trafficking survivors, hear their stories, document their truth and demand change. Together, we can make a difference. For more information about this issue please visit our website and connect with us on social media @3_generations.
