In our last post, we shared the excitement of our children heading home for school break — reunions with family, rest, and play. But for many of our girls, this holiday season brings a challenge we don't often talk about: managing their periods without pads, clean water, or privacy.
During term time, our Keep Her in School initiative ensures girls have sanitary supplies and a safe, supportive environment. When school closes, that support system disappears — and so does the routine that helps girls feel dignified and cared for. At home, many face stigma and isolation, excluded from everyday activities like cooking or visiting relatives simply because their periods are treated as something shameful. Some resort to unsafe materials like rags or leaves. Others stay confined indoors, missing out on the very freedom the holidays are meant to bring.
This isn't a minor inconvenience — it's a health and dignity crisis hiding in plain sight. Poor menstrual hygiene can lead to infections, and the silence around it chips away at a girl's confidence long after the holiday ends.
Because of your continued support, we're able to change this. Your generosity means girls in Mukono and Eastern Uganda have access to sanitary pads and hygiene education, and a clear message: their bodies are nothing to be ashamed of, in school or out. Thanks to you, more girls can enjoy this break at home with dignity, free from fear and stigma.
Thank you for staying with us through every season of these children's lives.
