Feed and educate 3,500 children in rural Vietnam

Last month, PeaceTrees staff in Vietnam visited kindergartens to deliver gifts to students in celebration of Tet, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year! The visits supported our work to maintain the school food program for students attending PeaceTrees kindergartens. These school lunches are often the only reliable source of nutrition for our 4,379 kindergarten students from Quang Tri and Quang Bình Provinces. Nutritious meals for students attending PeaceTrees kindergartens is an important step towards eliminating undernutrition, a problem that still affects a quarter of Vietnamese children aged 0-5. 

Pictured here are students at the newly rebuilt A Xing Village Kindergarten in Quang Tri Province! The rebuild of this kindergarten was completed at the end of 2021 in response to the kindergarten being severely damaged by storms in 2020. Students were recently welcomed back to this school and received lucky envelopes in honor of Tet! The resumption of classes means that students have enjoyed increased food security and consistent access to clean water on top of a regular education. 

Food security in central Vietnam is still impacted by the legacy of war. PeaceTrees staff is committed to making the land in Quang Tri and Quang Bình safe for community-led development and agricultural projects, as well for the many kindergartens and community centers that provide a safe space to learn and lifesaving mine risk education. This year, we will continue to work to expand projects that provide clean water, nutritious food, and economic opportunities to communities still impacted by the legacy of war.

Over the summer, PeaceTrees worked hard to continue their important work even as Covid cases increased and many cities were placed under lockdown. Despite these challenges and setbacks, PeaceTrees EOD teams have cleared nearly 5 million square meters of land. We are grateful for the continued health and safety of our staff, and so proud of how much we have been able to accomplish over these past months! PeaceTrees looks forward to when operations can resume at full capacity and hope that our friends in Vietnam continue to stay healthy. 

PeaceTrees is additionally excited to announce that the brand new Ooc Village Kindergarten is open in time for the 2021-2022 school year! The kindergarten welcomed 29 students to the building as the school year began the first week of September. Access to early education for these students would not have been possible without the generous support and friendship of donors like you. Our kindergartens in the Huong Hoa and Dakrong districts of Quang Tri also began their school years this month, with some lockdowns easing and the vaccine rollout continuing successfully. PeaceTrees is hopeful that we can welcome back all kindergarteners to school in the near future.   

PeaceTrees will also be celebrating its 26th Anniversary this October! We would like to invite you to this virtual celebration on October 25th at 5:30 pm. The event will highlight the amazing work your support makes possible, and show how your continued commitment can further our work for peace, reconciliation, and safety in Vietnam.
