Growing together sustainably!

Dear friends,

In our mission to spread sustainable organic farming practices, we must also keep learning and enhancing our own knowledge and skills so that we can better prepare young farmers to succeed in their endeavors in the agriculture industry.

Recently, our farmers received training in natural farming, trained by a seasoned professional in farming from Japan. While we have practiced organic farming, we have yet to fully implement the practices of natural farming. In principle, natural farming promotes the natural biotic and abiotic elements of the environment in our farm’s ecosystem. As the natural farming practices increase the soil’s fertility by using readily available elements like leftover mushroom seeds, indigenous microorganisms, and other fermented organic materials without adding more organic fertilizers, the farm becomes more sustainable.

As we are still in the process of practicing natural farming and seeing its long-term results, we are thrilled at the prospect of spreading more environmentally friendly farming practices to agricultural students who will be coming to our farm this year.

Your impact on our organic farm in 2023!

Dear friends,

Happy New Year from the farm! My name is Toufan and I help manage the farm on a day-to-day basis, liaising with our farmers and our buyers, but I also help to mentor young farmers and agribusiness students from our partner universities. As we begin the year 2024, I just wanted to say thank you for your continued support which has been instrumental in allowing our farm to host these young farmers and students as well as supporting disadvantaged families who live near the farm.

In total, you have supported over 40 young farmers in 2023 to learn all about sustainable organic farming practices. One of those we mentored had this to say about the program:

“I learned a lot during my apprenticeship at YUM Organic Farm. It was my first time working fully on a farm where I learned everything about sustainable organic farming from cultivation of seeds, to harvesting, to the distribution and marketing of vegetables to the customers.

Additionally, I gained valuable experience, knowledge and insights that I could only get by being at the farm such as tried and true organic farming methods, as well as life lessons. Those are the experiences that I would otherwise not get just by learning in a classroom.”

We hope that each and every single young farmer who learned at our farm will carry forward the knowledge, skills and spirit to the communities they will be involved in.

Additionally, last year we were able to deliver over 100 donation packages (worth close to $800) to disadvantaged families (with priority for those with pregnant women and elderly) in the communities nearby the farm.

On behalf of YUM and the communities we serve, thank you for being a vital part of the YUM Organic Farm! Your generosity has made a tangible difference in the lives of countless individuals, and we look forward to achieving even greater impact in the coming year!

A Record-breaking Internship Cohort!

Dear friends,

We're thrilled to announce that the doors to our organic farm are wide open once again to agricultural students to do their internship program, and this time, we're breaking records with a total of 28 students joining us at the farm!

When students come to the farm to do their internship program, the aim has always been the exchange of knowledge and passion for organic farming. This time, 25 students come from local agricultural high schools and 3 students come from Indonesia’s prestigious agricultural university, Bogor Agricultural Institute (Institut Pertanian Bogor, IPB)

This number marks a significant milestone for our program. Over the years, we've had an average of around 30 students per year, making this the most extensive cohort we've ever had at one time.

Additionally, the internship program has always been about more than just farming. It's about nurturing the next generation of agricultural leaders who are passionate about organic farming, sustainable farming methods, environmental stewardship, and the future of food security. Each student brings their own unique perspectives, fresh ideas, and boundless enthusiasm, enriching our farm with their presence.

As they immerse themselves in the daily rhythms of our organic farm, these students will gain hands-on experience in every aspect of organic farming. From tilling the soil, to nurturing seedlings and crops, and to harvesting the produce that they have planted.

The personal development of each of the young farmers during the internship will extend far beyond the work in the farm. As they have come to stay in our facilities, they are also exposed to the responsibilities of living away from home—from ensuring the cleanliness of the facilities, cooking their own food, developing respectful friendships with one another, and eventually becoming valuable members of society.

So, as we welcome this record-breaking cohort of interns, we invite you all to join us in celebrating the growth of our organic farming community. Together, we're sowing the seeds of a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future. Stay tuned for updates and stories from our interns as they embark on this incredible journey of growth, learning, and organic farming.
