Feed and Treat Rescued Animals in Rural Romania

There are months when running an animal rescue feels almost manageable. And then there are months like this September.

We currently have around 80 animals in our care, and feeding them remains our largest regular expense. Every month, regardless of what else happens, there are dozens of bowls that need to be filled every single day.

But food is only the beginning. Over the past months, several of our animals have needed ongoing or increasingly complex veterinary care. Thor, one of our dogs, continues treatment for a chronic leg wound after surviving severe babesiosis. We are currently taking him for a series of laser therapy sessions, hoping to finally help the wound heal and avoid more invasive treatment.

Felix, one of our cats, continues to struggle with severe chronic stomatitis despite having had his teeth removed. He requires regular treatment and wet food, and lately even that treatment has not been giving him the same relief for as long as it used to.

Our pony, Táltos, has needed specialist veterinary care and orthopedic horseshoes. We are already seeing a difference in his mobility, which makes every trip, treatment and bill worth it, but his treatment is not finished yet.

And then there is Mada, one of our puppies. She has had balance problems since she was very young, and despite treatment her condition has been deteriorating. Tests for Neospora came back negative, so our next step is an MRI to try to understand what is happening and whether there is something more we can do for her. Through all of this, she is still eating, playing and running whenever her little body allows her to.

These are only some of the animals requiring medical care. Alongside the complicated cases, there are still vaccinations, deworming, routine treatments, veterinary consultations and all the ordinary expenses involved in caring for around 80 rescued animals.

And, of course, they still need to eat.

Sometimes rescue is one emergency. Sometimes it is simply keeping dozens of animals healthy, fed and safe for another month. And sometimes everything seems to happen at once. September has very much been the latter.

Every donation to this project helps us keep going through months like this — filling the bowls, paying another veterinary bill, buying another treatment and giving each animal the care they need.
