Food insecurity in Australia has hit crisis levels, affecting families, workers, children, and people with disability. Foodbank urgently needs funding to source essential foods that aren't available through traditional rescue channels. Your support ensures a steady supply of diverse, nutritious, and culturally appropriate foods so families, school children, and individuals with special needs always have what they need. Every donation helps turn hunger into hope and stability.
Food insecurity is at crisis levels, affecting 3.4 million Australian households (32%) in the past year. Nearly half of low-income households struggle, the highest rate since the cost-of-living crisis began. Many are reducing food quality, eating less, or going days without meals. Single-parent households (69%) are hardest hit, and regional areas (37%) suffer more than metro ones (30%). Charities face record demand, with over half of food-insecure households seeking relief more often.
Funding will be directed to Foodbank's National Food Program, which will enable us to provide a consistent and sustainable supply in a variety of essential foods that are nutritious and convenient for those in need during these extraordinary times. This includes foods and products such as cereal, milk, canned vegetables, pasta, meal bases, rice and meat. We will be able to source these critical foods that don't come in sufficient quantities via traditional rescue channels.
Last year, in 2024, Foodbank sourced the equivalent to 92 million meals for those in need. Not only do our services address people's immediate nutrition needs but they contribute to improvements in their health, emotional well-being, sense of self-worth, social relationships and overall standard of living.
