A New Year; New Additions and Bigger impact

By Jess Robinson | Community Programme Manager

Happy to be back in school!
Happy to be back in school!

Dear friend,

We hope this finds you and your family well.  As we're sure you are, we're crossing our fingers for a healthier, happier and more productive 2021.

A Rollercoaster Few Months

After the highs of returning to school in September and successfully getting all of our students back in classes by November, there were unfortunately a new spate of covid-19 cases in Cambodia, and the Government and Ministry of Education made the decision to close all schools once again. From mid-November and throughout December, we did our best to support our students from afar. The new year is now here, and we are very relieved to share that we once again welcomed our students back on site at the beginning of January. Everyone is thoroughly enjoying getting back into the swing of a slightly more normal daily life!

Due to the closures and disruption from this past year, instead of beginning our new school year in November as normal, the start of the school year was pushed back to February.  Thankfully, during the most recent closure, our team were given permission to visit families at home to start the process of registering new students.  Spreading the word amongst the community, helping families see the benefits of their children studying with us, and assisting them with the application is a crucial job, so in some ways it was a blessing to have a little extra time to focus on this. We’re thrilled to share the news that we have 52 new students enrolled and starting this year with us. We’re so happy to welcome these budding new students to Helping Hands!

Developments in our Sports Project and Increasing our Impact

In other exciting news, we’re very happy to introduce you to our new Sports Project Manager, Jared Cahners (see below). Jared is well-known around Siem Reap as 'the frisbee guy’ as he organises weekly games of Ultimate Frisbee. He can also speak Khmer (the local language) which is a huge asset. Fresh ideas are always very welcome, and we’re looking forward to seeing how Jared and the sports team develop the project over the coming months.

Now that schools are open again, the sports team have been able to re-focus their efforts on making a bigger impact on the community by partnering with other schools in the area. We currently have six local primary schools on board, and are hoping to secure a few secondary schools in the near future too. These partnerships will involve members of our team running regular sports sessions at each of the schools. These schools currently offer no, or very little sports activities for their students, so this project will make a big difference in helping their students live an active, healthy lifestyle, learn skills in team work, leadership and sportsmanship, develop motor skills and have lots of fun!

A focus of the Sports Project is the Goals for Girls initiative, which works to promote gender equality and female empowerment amongst young girls in the area surrounding Helping Hands. Using sports as the foundation to workshops and activities, the girls learn skills in leadership, team work and event planning. Each session also works to improve their confidence and self-esteem. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the project was limited to working with 10 Helping Hands’ students in recent months, but the re-opening of schools enables the project to expand to the wider community, and we’ve already increased the number of participants to 15.  We’re excited to see how this will continue to grow over the coming months.

New Family Member and Additional Roles

Our cook, Puou, is currently on maternity leave, and while we miss her greatly, the rest of the team are doing a wonderful job of coming together to support our gardener and ensure all our students still get the same delicious meals! We’re especially pleased to have Head Sports Coach Lak on hand.  He’s been helping out in the kitchen, cooking breakfasts for all the students, and lunch for the staff on meeting days. He's proving to be a very diverse, talented (and busy!) membepr of the team!

Hoping for a Healthy Year of Developments

We’re all relieved to have 2020 behind us, and are looking forward to what 2021 will bring. We’re crossing our fingers that the situation around the world will begin to settle and are hoping for positive developments soon. Unfortunately, while we hope the worst is behind us, as an organisation we’re still on an uphill battle.  With travel at a near standstill, and many around the world losing jobs, the knock on effect on our funding has been tough. Any and all funds we receive are immensely appreciated, and go towards supporting our staff in their endeavours to provide the best possible education and support for our students. You can make a difference to day.  Please help us continue empowering our students if you can:

Stay safe, and best wishes to you and your family.
