Celebrations all around!

Writing Through workshop
Writing Through workshop

The last few months have been full of celebrations at Helping Hands.  We've seen some very exciting developments to our curriculum, some wonderful unique learning opportunities for both students and staff, and fun and celebratory events too.

Curriculum Development

Education is of course at the forefront of what we do at Helping Hands and we're always looking to provide additional learning opportunities for our students and develop our curriculum where we can.  We're happy to share that the last few months have seen long-term developments to our programme as well as a couple of unique workshops

Creative Writing Workshop

Each year, we aim to provide a group of our students with a unique workshop that works to expand their language, writing skills, creativity, imagination, and confidence.  The workshop sees them producing poems and short stories both independently and as a group.

It's with thanks to our partner organisation Writing Through, former Programme and Communications Manager, Sita, and the generosity of our supporters, that we were once again able to provide this unique learning experience.

And what a wonderful and creative week it was!

The theme for this years workshop was the Natural World.  Using the environment around them, the students took nature walks to help them brainstorm ideas for their writing.  They discussed evolution, the science behind how humans and animals grow, and all the benefits that trees and plants have on our environment.

It was wonderful to see our students being creative and exploring different ideas, thoughts and feelings. They all thoroughly enjoyed the week, and were very proud of the beautifully written pieces of work they produced.  The 'Big Event' saw each student presenting their work to family and friends, it was a great day!  Congratulations to all involved!

New Sports Programme

With huge thanks to the Globalteer Sports Project, we've not only been the lucky recipients of new sports equipment but also a new teacher who is focussed solely on Physical Education.  We're all very happy to welcome Teacher Lak to the Helping Hands team.

Lak is doing a brilliant job of implementing a variety of sports classes each day: incorporating fun warm up activities, skills training and plenty of games, as well as teaching our students about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle! Our students are loving their new sports curriculum!

Health and Hygiene Workshops

Health and hygiene are big focuses of ours, and we’ve been lucky enough to have volunteer Francesca run hygiene workshops for our staff and alumni who volunteer at the school.  These workshops have not only been very informative but have also been a whole load of fun with a variety of games being used to teach different hygiene messages!

Our staff and alumni are now all perfectly equipped to pass on the information they’ve learnt to our students and their families.  Big thank you to Francesca for giving her time to share her knowledge with us.

Celebrations galore!

Khmer New Year Party!

Khmer New Year (Choul Chnam Thmey) falls in mid-April, and coincides with the end of the harvesting season.  It is one of the biggest and most important holidays of the year, and is particularly enjoyable for children, given all the fun water games that are typical of Khmer New Year.

Before our staff and students took a well-earned break with their families we had our own celebration at school.  Each class cooked up a delicious feast and we had lots of games, music and dancing!

Kong and Neang tie the knot!

We're all very excited to share the wonderful news that two of our staff members got married last month.

Kong and Neang's wedding was a happy, colourful celebration of the joining of these two dedicated members of our team.  A huge congratulations to the two of you, we all wish you a very long and happy life together.

Thank you so much for continuing to support Helping Hands, we couldn't do any of this without the generosity of people like you!
