Helping Hands New School is open!

Take a look at our wonderful new school!

We are so excited to report that our new school is finally up and running and the children and teachers just love it. We have four airy new classrooms, a brand new toilet block – complete with western style toilets – and a lovely covered area for hand washing and tooth-brushing and collecting water from our new well.  The children were so eager to move in that as soon as they were built they immediately set about moving the new desks into the classrooms!

In typical Helping Hands style the covered washing and drinking area used to be a temporary classroom at our old school, but was still in good condition when we moved so the villagers got together, lifted it up, lock stock and barrel and carried it down the road to its new home - just take a look at the photos!

Growing our own fruit and veg.

To celebrate its completion the villagers were invited to an opening ceremony so they could see the new school for themselves. And with the generosity of the villagers shining through it also turned into a mass tree-planting ceremony. The villagers got together once again and donated 80 young fruit trees – mango, jackfruit, coconut and banana – all of which will make a valuable contribution to our breakfast programme and help the project to keep food costs down.

One of the trees was officially dedicated to long term supporter Aline, who was visiting us at the time of the ceremony and who, along with another long term supporter, Brian, had paid for the land where the new school now proudly stands.

Meanwhile our vegetable crops are thriving and we have just started harvesting our own long beans, water spinach, morning glory and corn.

Thanks to all our supporters.

We are so thrilled with the new school and really humbled by the huge amount of support we have received to make it happen, from every individual overseas supporters and the villagers of Prasat Chas to corporate supporters like Mindshare and Merck in Singapore and to the SAGA Charitable Foundation in the UK. With everyone’s continued support we can make an even bigger difference to future of the children and their amazing families.

Proud Moments for our teachers.

Part of our commitment to providing long term education to the children at Helping Hands includes the ongoing training of our teachers. Helping Hands’ parent charity Globalteer was the Cambodia-side coordinator for a recent visit to Siem Reap from UK based LRTT – Limited Resource Teacher Training - who specialise in training teachers in the developing world who have limited access to traditional teaching resources, all the things that Western teachers might take for granted, even in these days of educational austerity!

It was the second time that Globalteer had coordinated the LRTT trip to Siem Reap and this time round more than 90 Cambodian teachers enjoyed the benefit of top notch training and tips from qualified teacher trainers.

Three of our teachers – Malaythorng, Neang and Sopheap were able to take part and received certificates for completing the four week course. We are extremely proud of their continued develpment and have a sneaking suspicion they are a little bit too - their smiles say it all (see photo).

Look out for details of the next Helping Hands fund-raiser.

Expansion of Helping Hands is fantastic but it also means that our costs inevitably increase. So with this in mind, Helping Hands staff, volunteers and children will be taking part in a fundraiser later this month to help cover ongoing costs such as teacher salaries, materials and emergency medical care. We know that times are tough and there are lots of calls on your goodwill every day, but if every supporter made a small donation or even set up a monthly payment through GlobalGiving it would go a really long way to helping secure the future of Helping Hands.

Details of the fundraiser will be posted shortly on Facebook so please make sure you are following us at https://www.facebook.com/HHCambodia/ so you can share the fun, or simply make a donation today by clicking the GlobalGiving donate button.

All good wishes and heartfelt thanks from Sita, Nang and everyone at Helping Hands!
