Football, Festivities and a Farewell

We’ve had a busy few months at Helping Hands, full of activity, learning and lots of fun!

Helping Hands first ever Football Tournament

At the beginning of March, with the help of volunteer Adora, we held our very first Helping Hands Football Tournament.  We organised a full school tournament with a total of 28 teams, competing in 3 divisions.  The student’s loved coming up with their team names, from Red Buffalo and Dragon United to Khmer Angkor FC, and were able to make the most of our brand new football goals that were generously funded by some of our staff and volunteers.

The winning teams from each division were awarded their very own football tops. It was an amazing couple of days of fun, football and friendly competition!  The students really enjoyed the change to their usual schedule and we plan to hold a Tournament every year whilst also incorporating other sporting activities into the programme.

Creative Writing Workshop

Also in March, a group of students from the elementary class took part in a poetry and storytelling workshop.  The Writing Through Workshop, facilitated by our very own Sita had the students working both as a group and independently to create some amazing, imaginative and creative pieces of work.  At the end of the week, the students proudly presented their poems and stories to friends and family.  They did a wonderful job of showing off their creative writing, and presentation skills, we are all very proud of them.

Khmer New Year Celebrations

April sees the Khmer New Year celebrations take place, and Siem Reap is central to the festivities, with a huge four day festival taking place at Angkor Watt.  This is an important time of year for our Students and Staff, a special time for families to come together and celebrate the new year.  Our Students and Teachers take a well earned break and enjoy their time with their family over this period, but before that we held our own Khmer New Year Party at the school with lots of traditional water games, and plenty of fun, food and drink!

Goodbye and Good Luck

At the end of March, we bid farewell to the inspirational and talented Sita, who has left us to explore new adventures in Australia.  Sita put her heart and soul into Helping Hands over the last two years and she will be sorely missed.  We all wish her the very of luck in her new adventures and hope to see her again very soon!

I would also like to take this opportunity to introduce myself, my name is Jess, and I am very fortunate to have been appointed to take on Sita’s role.  I am incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to work alongside such wonderful, hardworking and inspirational people, and I am excited about what the future could bring for Helping Hands... watch this space!

Thank you

As you know, Helping Hands relies on the kindness and generosity of people like you, our supporters, to continue running our Programme, providing our 300 students with Education, Nutritious Food and Social support.  Your donations go a long way here in Cambodia, and we are incredibly grateful to each and every donor!  We do however need more support to continue to run and grow our Programme, if you able to please consider making a donation to support Helping Hands, and if you sign up to a recurring donation between 1st and 13th May Global Giving will match your donation by 100%, meaning your donation will make an even BIGGER IMPACT on Helping Hands!

From all the Students, Teachers and Staff at Helping Hands, thank you for reading and thank you so so much for your invaluable support.  Orkun Chran!
