Exciting happenings at Helping Hands

By Jess Robinson | Community Programme Manager

Fun, Games and Laughter!
Fun, Games and Laughter!

We've had a busy few months of fun, learning and improvements... from magic shows to slow bicycle races and plumbing to proud parents!  Helping Hands has been a hive of activity!

Running water is just around the corner!

We have some VERY exciting news to share...!! Thanks to a few incredibly generous donors including volunteers Katie and Tom, we have raised enough funds to be able to make a start on our Clean Water Project!

During the 2 weeks that Tom spent with us he put his plumbing skills to use and started installing piping to our bathrooms, kitchen and water filters.  We also enlisted the help of a few villagers to construct a tower to hold our water tank and build a long sink for our kitchen.  The last bits of piping are now being installed! Thank you so much to those who donated to our project and especially to Tom for getting stuck in to the hard work!

We do however still have a way to go... and we are looking for donations to enable us to buy a pump and install electrics to be able to finish off the rest of our Clean Water Project.

Can you help us provide running water around our school?

If you have any spare change lying around (or even a little more) please consider making a donation on 18th July, as for one day only GlobalGiving are matching donations by 50%!! e.g. if you could spare $10, we'd actually receive $15!!  Meaning every donation would have an even bigger impact and get us closer to our goal of having clean running water at Helping Hands!

18th July is the date to remember!  Mark it on your calendar and click this link to take advantage of the Bonus Day!

Proud Parents, Students and Teachers!

At Helping Hands, Education is of course at the forefront of everything we do, and we love to celebrate our students and teachers successes!

Parent-Teacher Meeting

Lots of our students' parents joined us at school at the beginning of June, to meet the teachers, discuss our programme and to help us celebrate the successes of our students from the Basic Khmer and Basic English classes!

Congratulations to teachers Thong and Yoeuy for delivering great classes and getting our students up to their current level. We had some great results from these classes in the recent tests and the top performers even won themselves some prizes! A big well done to everyone for all your hard work!! Keep it up!

Teacher Yoeuy starts University

At the end of May Teacher Yoeuy began studying for his degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language at University in Siem Reap.  Yoeuy has shown a great deal of commitment to his studies and to Helping Hands over the years, having started out as a student himself before returning to volunteer a couple of hours a day and then successfully taking on the role of Basic English Teacher.  As such, Helping Hands awarded Yoeuy with a scholarship to support him through his studies.  If you would like to find out more about our Scholarship Programme and how you could support Yoeuy or another student through University contact us on helping.hands@globalteer.org.

Extra-curricular fun!

Helping Hands isn't just a school, it's a place where learning, growing and playing go hand in hand, where children can enjoy being children.  We always strive to include fun activities within lessons as well as having periodic 'fun days'.  Read on to hear about our most recent one!

Slow Bicycle Race

Slow and steady wins the race… and in this case, that really is true!

As part of our on-going expansion of our Sports Programme, we held another exciting sporting event at the end of May - the Helping Hands Slow Bicycle Race!

Our students were divided into 5 age categories to compete in what was possibly the slowest race yet. The aim was to cycle as slow as possible without the feet touching the ground (or falling off) and the last person to cross the finish line won the race!

Everyone had a great day with hat making, water balloon throwing, and of course plenty of bicycle racing!

A big thank you to all of our volunteers for helping to organise the day and a special shout out to the three lovely ladies who donated some amazing prizes for our winners- thank you so much for your generosity!

Save the Date! 18th July

GlobalGiving BONUS Day!

As mentioned above, for one day only GlobalGiving are running a bonus offer where they will match one off donations by a huge 50%. So no matter how much you have to spare, if you are able to, please consider donating on the 18th to stretch your donation further and make an even BIGGER impact!

To add even more excitement they will match new recurring donations by a huge 100%!! If you could spare $5 a month GlobalGiving will double it to $10! This could pay for 2 students to have a healthy breakfast for an entire month!

If you've been thinking of making a donation to Helping Hands, 18th July is the time to do it!

As always, thank you so much for your support. Please continue to give us a 'helping hand' and spread the word to your family and friends.
