10 years on...and a new home for Helping Hands!

By Sita ter Horst | Project Support Coordinator

Ten years in numbers!
Ten years in numbers!

The last few months have been busy and blooming in Cambodia, with a lot of things happening, and we’d like to share our latest news with you...

10 years of Helping!

As you all know, in the month of October we were delighted to celebrate Helping Hands’ 10th birthday!

How wonderful it has been to look back on all those years and everything that we have been able to do, teach, learn and develop together with the students, staff, the village, and of course with all of you, our amazing donors, supporters and volunteers.

The party that was held at the school at the end of our 10 days of celebrations, was a great success, with almost all the parents of our 300 students coming to celebrate, alongside of course all our students, but also the village leaders, government school directors and scholarship students.

Despite the rain (it was actually quite cozy with everyone squeezed under the tents), we all had an amazing afternoon that was filled with smiles during presentations from students, speeches from our staff and the villagers, some hilarious interactive games and of course traditional (and modern) Khmer dancing.

We also took some time on this special day to put Teacher Vanna and Teacher Sopheap in the spotlight, who both have been with Helping Hands for 10 years! What an amazing achievement, we are very proud and feel lucky to still have these two super heroes on board.

We would like to say a big big thank you to everyone who has donated, supported and celebrated this meaningful milestone of 10 years with us. We hope you all enjoyed celebrating and looking back, with a smile and a tear. We definitely did!

Exciting News – Helping Hands is moving and expanding!

After looking back on the past 10 years of Helping Hands, we are now looking forwards into the future with some very exciting developments we’d like to share with you!

New School Build

As some of you may know, Helping Hands has been looking to move to a new site and expand for quite some time.

Our class sizes are now are too big, which brings challenges for both teachers and students so by decreasing the class sizes we will be able to make sure that students with the same level can study together, and the teacher can give each student more personal guidance and attention, which will optimise their learning.

More classrooms will give us the opportunity to make this happen, so that we are able to give our students get the best chance to succeed in the future.

Our plans to expand have had to be accelerated because the Helping Hands’ site has been earmarked for flooding by the local authorities as part of a plan to utilize neighbouring land in a new road building scheme. So over the last year and a half we have been in the process of buying another, bigger plot of land that will allow us to build a brand-new school with more classrooms.

At our third attempt we finally received a letter of permission from the local authorities to build on the new plot of land. (yaay!)

Of course we are over the moon with this amazing news after some time of waiting, and we are immensely thankful to everyone who has supported us along the way! Our particular thanks go to long-term supporters Brian Kuhl and Aline Bersouille for purchasing the new and to the SAGA Charitable Trust in the UK for their very generous grant (and extreme patience) which will help fund the new school.

We are looking forward to sending everyone updates as the build progresses!

New Teacher

In preparation for our new, bigger school we have just took on board a new full-time English teacher, Neang! In addition, with more classes moving up from our Basic Khmer Programme to English, and Project Coordinator Nang requiring more time for administration and other tasks, hiring a new full-time teacher makes it possible to keep up to date with the schedule and giving all students the opportunity to learn the same amount of hours.

Having experience in teaching English in the charity sector and also having taught at the local government school, we believe Teacher Neang is a great asset to our team! We’re very happy to have him on board!

Christmas – A time of giving!

Christmas is coming and we are launching a very important Christmas fundraising appeal. Along with our regular running costs, the new school means that we will need to raise more money than ever to give our 300 children and their families the best chance possible for a happy prosperous and healthy future.

To help us get 2017 off to a great start we are hoping to raise $10,000 this Christmas.

If you’d like to help us reach our Christmas Fundraising goal, and help make sure our students have an amazing kick off in 2017, with a brand-new school, new staff and lots of hope for the future, please consider making a one of gift or setting a monthly donation to Helping Hands through Global Giving.

Remember all donations through Global Giving are tax deductible in the USA and the UK and if you are in the UK and set up a new monthly gift before December 31st, Global giving will give us a bonus!

Thank you for all your help this past year and a very Merry Christmas, from the Helping Hands Team!
