Why our students love that "Back to School" feeling!

By Simon Hare | Development Director, Globalteer, parent charity

Returning to school brings great excitement!
Returning to school brings great excitement!

Autumn - or fall - is always an important time in the school year and for the students at Helping Hands, it’s no different. For many of our students the highlight of this time of year is when they receive their brand new school uniforms. Without a uniform children are not allowed to attend government school, and given the cost, this can make a big dent in many of our families’ budgets.

Thanks to long term supporter Aline Bersoulle, who sells Cambodian handicrafts in her native France to raise funds for Helping Hands, we are able to give every school age child two school uniforms every year. The uniforms are hand made by a nearby social enterprise which means that giving our students a smart new school uniform also provides paid work to local skilled workers.

How school uniforms fit in with our strategy

The school uniforms programme is just one element of Helping Hands’ holistic approach to education - the core of our community’s long term strategy to secure a poverty-free future. It sits alongside our breakfast programme that means the poorest children receive enough nourishment to be able to concentrate and stay awake in class; our health and hygiene programme that helps to reduce preventable illnesses in children and adults which in turn leads to better attendance at school and at work; and finally our scholarship programme which ensures that students with a real aptitude in a particular area are able to fully develop their skills for the benefit of their families and community.

Meet one of our star students

One of our scholarship students is Mr Lapp who has just started his second year studying nursing and midwifery at one of Siem Reap’s University. Mr Lapp is a traditional heale but with our support has been able to learn additional skills that will have a huge impact on the lives of the villagers.

We asked him to tell us a bit about his studies, and this is what he had to tell us:

“For the last semester I have been on practice in a Siem Reap hospital, 30km from the centre. I am being taught to look for signs of symptoms of sickness. I love this! It is very interesting. I am also learning how to protect people from long-term disease. My favourite area of study when I am in class is Nutrition, I find it very useful. My least favourite is learning about infectious diseases and parasites (pulls a face)!

“When I am not studying I try to help in the community. For simple illnesses I can give medicine and advice. There is a lot of sickness in my village, many coughs, ‘flu and stomach problems. If the children are sick I advise the families to go to hospital as soon as possible; disease can be serious for children at this time of year (there is a lot of fever and dengue because of rainy season). I also do farming, raise animals, plant fruits and vegetables and transport goods from the market for wife to sell outside our house.

“I want to be a nurse to help my community and to grow my own knowledge.”

You help us make all this possible!

Thanks to all our supporters and donors, the future is looking bright for Mr Lapp and for all our villagers. We would not be able to achieve half of what we do without your help so please accept our heartfelt thanks for your ongoing support.

We will very soon be launching our first ever Christmas fund-raising appeal and hope you will be able to spare a little to help us build a sustainable future for our wonderful community. Watch this space!
