Dear Friends,

In this report, we want to share the results of our work over the past three months - January, February and March of 2022.

Finally, all COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted in Kazakhstan, and all our Mentors can meet their mentees.

In the past three months, we have received 103 mentorship candidates’ applications from five cities: Karaganda, Shymkent, Pavlodar, Atyrau, and Uralsk. In total, there are 365 applications from all 13 regions of Kazakhstan received over the past three months.

In Shymkent we have trained 11 volunteers and one of them signed a contract to become a mentor. Due to the pandemic, children had to follow the orphanage quarantine mandate and self-isolate. However, the mentors were able to regularly visit them at the orphanage territory. The mentors tried to spend a quality time with the children, creating interesting activities that would comply with the COVID restrictions. For example, they organized various cooking master classes where children learned how to make salads, shawarmas, pizzas, cakes, and lemonade. Through the inventiveness and persistence our mentors built up trustful relationship with the children. The great result for us was when one of the mentees – Nikita told his mentor about his first love and asked for advice on the matter.

In Karaganda, we have trained six volunteers, five of them became mentors. One of the stories we want to share is about the friendship between the mentor Galia and Angelina from the orphanage. Galia is kind, attentive and has business skills. She has an ability to understand and direct the teenager to make her own, independent decisions.  Angelina is humble, attentive, and indecisive. She enjoys learning new things with a mentor. Galia always supports and helps Angelina to learn and practice her communication skills.

In Pavlodar, Ademau, the girl from the orphanage was interested in gymnastics on an amateur level. With the guidance of her mentor Lyudmila, she started her professional journey. The mentor supported the girl and developed her talent in sports. In addition, Lyudmila motivates Ademau to learn English and arranges the classes for her.

In Atyrau, in 2021 mentors were only able to have online meetings with the children due to the pandemic. In the beginning of 2022, all the restrictions have been lifted and now all our mentors can meet with children in-person, and they spend time together outside of the orphanage. This year, four volunteers signed a contract and became mentors. They meet their mentees every weekend and practice different activities such as art and chess classes or cooking.

In Uralsk one volunteer became a mentor and now, we have nine mentors there. One of the mentors became a foster parent to a teenager and now he is being raised in her family. Another mentor Aigul became a mentor to the brothers Aldiyar and Renat. At first, Aigul was a mentor only for Renat, but after some time, she started taking Aldiyar to their meetings. Aldiyar has a mental disorder and attended a specialized school. Over the time Aldiyar was able to control his emotions and aggression better. Now he goes to a regular school. His brother Renat will be graduating in a couple of years and Aigul helps him to choose future profession and to select a college.
