From Award-Winning Design to Impactful Action

We are thrilled to share a pivotal moment starting from beginning of the year 2026 that marked a significant leap forward for Girls Education Mission International. This year, as we celebrate our 15th anniversary, we had the immense pleasure of officially unveiling our award-winning initiative, "The Girl Equation: Keeping Girls in Class." Your belief in our mission made this milestone possible, and we are excited to share the details of this transformative event.

The beginning of 2026 was truly monumental for GEM. In honor of the International Day of Education, we proudly launched "The Girl Equation: Keeping Girls in Class," an initiative that began as an idea and blossomed through six months of intense learning, collaboration, and innovation under the prestigious Local Innovators Program. Competing against 84 teams and 51 initiatives across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, "The Girl Equation" emerged as the top solution – a powerful affirmation of both the urgent need it addresses and the strength of the solution we are building together.

This initiative was co-created hand-in-hand with the Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), ensuring that its design is not only innovative but also practical, sustainable, and deeply integrated within existing educational systems. The unveiling event was a resounding success, bringing together over 130 stakeholders including government officials, educators, development partners, and community leaders. Their collective presence underscored a shared conviction: girls belong in school, and ensuring their continued education demands unified action. We were also honored by the presence of our international facilitator from Kenya, whose participation reinforced the critical importance of global collaboration in tackling local challenges.

More than just an unveiling, this moment represented a crucial transition: from conceptual design to tangible implementation, and from a powerful vision to impactful action on the ground.

Hope for Northern Nigerian Girls in a Hard Time

We are proud to share a major milestone that marks a turning point for Girls Education Mission International and the girls we serve. Our initiative, "The Girl Equation: Keeping Girls in Class", has been named the Overall Best Initiative in the 2025 Local Innovators Program placing our team 1st among 84 teams of local innovators from across Latin America, Asia and Africa.

This is a remarkable achievement that celebrates the strength of community-driven work. Our solution was co-created with girls, teachers, parents, community and religious leaders and the Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board demonstrating the true power of listening to and elevating local voices.

While this win does not come with funding, it delivers a global validation that "The Girl Equation" is one of the most promising community-led initiatives worth investing in.

Our recognition comes at a time when girls in Northern Nigeria are facing the most difficult conditions in years.

In the past week, tragic abductions have forced many schools to shut down across Northern Nigeria. Families are living in fear, learning has been interrupted, and thousands of girls are at risk of never returning to school.

This is exactly why our Local Innovators Program win is so important.

It shows that the world sees and believes in the approach we are using to protect and keep girls learning.

It shows that community solutions work, even in crisis.

And it reinforces the urgent need to scale our interventions to reach more girls who are being pushed out of school.

This recognition shows that our approach is not just impactful, it is scalable, replicable, and globally relevant.

Stories of Hope during our Validation Exercise

Dear Trusted Partner,

Thanks to your unwavering support, Girls Education Mission International recently embarked on a deeply meaningful territorial validation visit across Jos, Plateau State. We met not only with girls, parents, and teachers but also with government education leaders, religious figures, and community leaders, all united by one urgent mission: to give every girl a chance to learn and thrive.

Among the voices that touched us most was that of a teenage mother who shared, “I wanted to stay in school, but after becoming a mother, many doors closed to me. I felt forgotten and without hope.” Her story is a powerful reminder of the barriers still faced by vulnerable girls, and why our work matters now more than ever.

We also heard from the Principal of one of the schools of our girls who said:

"The scholarship awards provided by GEM have been a lifeline for many of our students, enabling them to continue their educational journey and pursue their dreams. Your organization’s investment in our students’ future is truly commendable and appreciated. Thank you for believing in the potential of our students and for being a shining example of kindness and philanthropy."

These stories of struggle and hope fuel our commitment to this vital mission.
