Preparing New Books to Give Out

By Gigo Alampay | Executive Director, CANVAS

GlobalGiving away more books in Babuyan Islands
GlobalGiving away more books in Babuyan Islands

We're down to our last few books of "Elias, Rocking Horse and Sol" and "Kulayan" as we were able to hand out more books to children in Camiguin in the Babuyan Islands of Cagayan. (Note: this Camiguin Island is different from the island-province of Camiguin in Mindanao.)

So, we're making a renewed effort to raise more funds - both here through GlobalGiving, as well as offline through other fundraising events to publish another of our titles.

This time, we're working to raise enough to publish several thousand copies of "Message in the Sand", one of our more popular children's books, written by international bestseller Charmaine Aserappa and illustrated by rising Filipino artist Roel Obemio. It is a simple story that affirms the power of an individual - even a child - to do something to make a difference for the environment, and you can read and listen to the story on our website (http://canvas.ph/message_in_the_sand.htm).

We'll again distribute those books to public schools, and this time, we're also working with teachers from the University of the Philippines" National Institute of Geological Sciences who will prepare guides with suggested learning activities that we can then also give to public school teachers so that they can use the books more effectively.

We hope you will all continue to support us in this effort. And please do tell your friends about us and encouraging them to join in.

As always, we will keep you posted on our progress and results.

Thank you again, everyone, and best regards,

--Gigo
