HKACLP Helped CLP Children Received Lip & Nose Revision Surgeries
Cleft lip and palate children may have some extent of facial differences owing to unideal lip repair. These stigma of visible deformities will undermine the affected children’s self-image and self-confidence. They may also susceptible to stares, teases and isolation at school. Most parents worry that the situation may get worse when their affected children growing into puberty. In view of these, HKACLP helped them to seek for lip and nose revision surgeries from Plastic & Reconstructive Department of public hospitals.
Recently, four children received lip and nose revision at the same time of alveolar bone grafting surgery. After the operations, the children recovered very well. Now, they look much more normal. They are more self-confident and always show radiant smiles. The parents are very happy that their son/daughter’s cleft characteristics can be minimized before they go to secondary school. They have expressed their deepest thanks to the Plastic Surgeons of Kwong Wah Hospital for changing the life of their children.
Charity Scaling and Fluoride Treatment for HKACLP Members
CLP children and youngsters need to receive orthodontics during the course of growth. So it is particularly important for them to maintain oral hygiene, preventing gum inflammation, periodontal disease, dental decay that may force their orthodontic treatment to stop.
To encourage members to pay more attention to oral hygiene and to receive regular tooth cleaning and fluoride treatment to prevent tooth decay, HKACLP and registered dental hygienist Ms Pauline Wong, besides organizing Dental Hygiene Workshops to guide CLP children and youngsters the correct ways of maintain their dental hygiene, offer Scaling and Fluoride Treatment for HKACLP Members at a super discount. Moreover, after each cleaning, Pauline will guide the correct oral cleaning method according to individual oral conditions.
Pauline is a member of the Association. She also experienced dental hygiene problem when she was growing up, so she understands the needs of the cleft lip and palate children.
‘Prepare CLP Kids for Starting School’ Seminar
A cleft lip and palate child may have more or less facial difference, speech delay and some articulation problems. Therefore, most parents worry about sending their affected children to school.
HKACLP holds each year the above seminar which is designed specifically for the parents with comprehensive information suggesting how the parents help their kids to get prepared for schooling. The seminar is conducted by an experienced kindergarten teacher who is also the mother of a cleft lip and palate child. For 1-2 years old kids, there are contents covering about pre-school preparation such as (1) early development of children’s social life; (2) potentiality of development, (3) building up self-confidence; and (4) let the children know early that they are a little different from others.
For 2-3 years old children who are about to start school, the speaker will explain how to help children strengthen: (1) adaptability; (2) self-confidence; and (3) social skills.
Besides, the speaker will also talk about some points to note such as: (1) keeping regular medical follow-ups; (2) caring speech problems; (3) how to select suitable school; (4) preparing the children for an interview; and (5) appropriate attire and responses during the interview. Lastly, the speaker will also remind the parents on how to deal with school bullying.
