Sharing by a Father of Cleft Lip & Palate Child on Father’s Day
Mr. Ho, father of a cleft lip and palate child whose is one of the members of HKACLP, was invited to attend ‘Father’s Day Sharing and Recognition Ceremony’ on 2017 Father’s Day at APM Millennium City. Mr. Ho appeared as a guest to share publicly his bittersweet experience for caretaking and upbringing his 11-year old daughter who is born with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate. During the sharing, Mr. Ho unfolded the difficulties and challenges faced by the parents of cleft lip and palate patients, and also disclosed the future treatments of his daughter for secondary deformities. Mr. Ho encouraged the parents that they should not easily give up, he believed that any hardship could be overcome if the whole family would face it together. Mr. Ho’s sharing received great applaud of encouragement and recognition. The subsequent mass media’s reports of the sharing helped to enhance the understanding and acceptance of the general public towards CLP patients.
Academic and Talent Awards to Childrenwith Cleft Lip & Palate
Patients with cleft palate/lip are at an elevated risk for developing psychosocial problems especially those relating to self-concept and appearance. It is our hope to help the children tap into their passions and their talents because there is no greater self-esteem booster than to know who they are, and be passionate about. Therefore, at the Annual General Meeting & Dinner Gathering of HKACLP, we present awards to young members with outstanding academic and talent accomplishments. Our young members also performed talent shows during the dinner gathering, including playing harmonica and violin, singing, dancing and plate-spinning (traditional acrobatics). Through the awards presentation and the chance of performing, we aim to encourage the children’s all-round development and foster positive life values and attitudes.
Community Educational Activities
As teasing and bullying is common across the lifespan to individuals with cleft lip and palate,HKACLP, as a patients’ organization for facial clefts, held a Charity Gala Premiere of the film ‘Wonder’ at Golden Harvest Whampoa on 19 November. We hope to take this event to draw the public’s awareness to cleft deformities and enhance them to give care and compassion to the patients, helping them to blend in the society. To promote this event, we posted broadview banner advertisements at Mass Transit Railway and sent out more than 3,000 invitations to various people, including medical partitioners, caring companies, donors and members.
‘Wonder’, based on the New York Times bestseller, tells the incredibly inspiring and heartwarming story of a 10-year old boy born with Treacher Collins syndrome and a cleft palate, who has been in and out of hospitals for years and now he tries to fit in at a new school. With his parents’ encouragement, he shows everyone that he is just an ordinary kid, no different than the rest of the world. He strives to teach others that beauty is not just on the outside (quoted from Wikipedia).
