"Medical Seminar on Reconstructive Surgeries for Cleft Anomalies & Microtia"

The medical seminar on "Reconstructive Surgeries for Cleft Anomalies & Microtia" was held in the afternoon on April 5th at the Hong Kong Space Museum Lecture Hall.  We were delighted to invite plastic surgeons. Dr. Li Kam Hop, Dr. Cheung Wing Yung, Dr. Ng Yim Hung, Dr. Ho Wai Yee and Dr. Ho Hiu Ching to conduct the seminar.  The topics were: plastic surgery treatment of auricular reconstruction for microtia, unilateral cleft lip and macrostomia, bilateral cleft lip, complete cleft palate, incomplete cleft palate/Pierrobin Syndrome, minor lip nose revisions for children patients and adult lip and nose surgery.

Between the five lecture topics, Mrs. Cho, mother of a cleft lip & palate child, shared how non-surgical lip and nose correction effectively improved the appearance of her child. Two other young people also shared their experiences: Chi Chun recounted his treatment for nasal base defects, and Cheng Wai stated how orthodontics helped him correct the underbite problem. After their presentations, the five doctors answered many questions from the parents, greatly benefiting everyone.  More than 100 people attended the event.

High-quality reconstructive surgery can change the lives of children with cleft lip and palate and craniofacial defects, making their appearance closer to normal after surgery.  The association hopes to increase parents' awareness of the treatment of cleft lip and palate and craniofacial defects by holding large-scale medical lectures, so that they know how to choose the most suitable public treatment services and help children take the right first step in rehabilitation.

Participating in the "Sowing Love and Caring for the Elderly in the Community - Meal Distribution Activity"

On May 11 and June 8, 2025, led by staff members, our parent-child volunteers from the association participated in the "Sowing Love and Caring for the Elderly in the Community - Meal Distribution Activity" organized by the Xuan Yuan Education Foundation x Caring for the Community Sustainability Team in the Yau Ma Tei area.  The sponsor of this meal distribution activity was the Hong Kong General Chamber of Pharmacy Limited, which also donated calcium tablets, pain relief patches, stomach medicine, etc. to the elderly.

After arriving the venue, the volunteers of the association automatically helped sticking the sponsor's label on the meal box, put the food into the lunch boxes and unpack the gifts.  When we distributed the meal boxes, bread, fruits, health products to the elderly over 70 years old, we also had brief chats with them showing them our care and concern.  Our parent-child volunteers were very happy to participate in this meaningful activity.

2025 Community Education Exhibition

The Association's 2025 Community Education Exhibition was held on June 22nd at Fortune First City, Sha Tin.  This year's exhibition received assistance from 8 volunteers from the Architectural Services Department, 8 volunteers from the UBS Volunteer Team, and 3 volunteers from the Xuan Yuan Community Caring Team to host booth games.  The exhibition featured 7 educational booths, including: Causes of Cleft Lip and Palate, The Treatment Journey for Clefts, The Transformation of Affected Babies, Understanding Cleft Lip Repair, Incorrect Bullying Behaviours, How to Interact with Patients, "I Can Do It", Q&A, display boards, a large TV showing the Association's promotional video, and small gifts distribution.

The event was very well-attended, with many children lining up at our various game booths. Our display boards also attracted a large crowd, providing information about cleft lip and palate and the association's services.  We also had a "Wishing Tree" and "Balloon Twister" booths where children could write down their wishes and receive cute balloons.

The event concluded successfully in a lively atmosphere throughout the afternoon. We hope that this community education exhibition will raise public awareness of cleft lip and palate and the needs of those affected, thereby promoting social inclusion.
